Mark your calendars – we’re off to Italy, specifically Puglia, for the only troubled detective drama worth watching this summer. Channel 4's Inspector Gerri – or simply Gerri as it's known in the show’s native Italy, where it first aired earlier this year – features a deeply empathetic detective inspector whose commitment to solving crimes stems from his own secret, troubled past that he’s hidden away.

Inspector Gerri doesn’t have any old cases on his hands, he’s dealing with Puglia's toughest cases involving minors and the most vulnerable, which means we’re in for quite a ride. If you're a fan of crime dramas like The Åre Murders or Deception, it's well worth tuning in - but before you do, here's everything you need to know about the series, including the plot, cast and release date. Happy binge-watching!

What is Inspector Gerri about?

Based on the four Ispettore Gerri Esposito novels by Giorgia Lepore, the eight-part series will introduce us to Gregorio “Gerri” Esposito (played by Giulio Beranek) a 35-year-old police inspector of Romani origin working in Trani, Puglia. He has “piercing eyes and a restless soul”, and is described as “mysterious, magnetic, and deeply flawed”.

Haunted by a troubled past and raised in a foster home, Gerri is a deeply empathetic detective, especially towards cases involving minors and vulnerable individuals. His investigative approach blends meticulous analysis with impulsive intuition - however, this often leads him into complex and risky situations.

Series 1 opens with the murder of 18-year-old Rossella Albani, the daughter of a powerful local lawyer. As Gerri delves into the case, he uncovers connections to a previous unsolved crime involving a Romani woman, suggesting a deeper web of secrets and power dynamics within the community.

Gerri's unconventional methods also ignite tension within the police force, as he clashes with the dutiful Chief Santeramo and sparks jealousy from fellow Inspector Calandrini. Yet one man, Alfredo Marinetti, believes in him completely. A mentor and father figure, Marinetti welcomes Gerri into his family until concern leads him to quietly investigate Gerri's hidden past.

There are plenty of great crime dramas available on Walter Presents and Channel 4. Some of our favourites recently include the Danish thriller The Sommerdahl Murders, an Italian crime drama – Flowers Over The Inferno – where the lead detective is suffering with early signs of Alzheimer’s disease, and The Devil's Leap, in which a father-daughter hike goes very wrong.
