Is there a better setting for a crime drama than a calm and friendly seaside town? Not according to The Sommerdahl Murders, the latest Danish thriller to hit our screens. The dramatic coastline of Eastern Denmark plays host to a series of murders that DCI Dan Sommerdahl (Peter Mygind) is tasked with solving - and it's sure to bring a chill to your evenings.
The sixth series airs in the show’s home country this year, but UK viewers can now catch up on the first and second series through Walter Presents and Channel 4 - and it’s well worth a watch. Not only because of the glorious setting. Before you tune in, though, here's everything you need to know about the series, including plot, cast, and how to watch it.
What is The Sommerdahl Murders about?
Think Broadchurch, but in Denmark. The lead character, DCI Dan Sommerdahl, spends his life diving into chilling crime cases in the coastal town of Elsinore – the real-life Helsingør, in the east of Denmark – while grappling with his tumultuous personal life.
Dan is married to Marianne Sommerdahl, who is a criminal technician in the police department, however she and Dan’s best friend and police partner, Flemming Torp, are having an affair, creating a rather messy love triangle for them all to deal with.
The Sommerdahl Murders began in its native Denmark in 2020 and has become a national hit, with its sixth series due to air later in 2025. The TV show is an adaptation of the series of Dan Sommerdahl books by Anna Grue, one of Denmark’s most-read crime authors, however the books are yet to be translated into English.
What is The Sommerdahl Murders series 2 about?
In series 2, Dan and Flemming tackle the high-profile murder of a world-famous musician, a devastating fire, and the suspicious death of a high school teacher. All the while, Dan must navigate the complexities of a love triangle involving his estranged wife.
