An end to any romantic relationship is always sad, but what if you decided to take revenge on your ex to cure the heartbreak? That’s the unique premise for a new comedy-thriller from Paramount+, set in a therapy group of divorcees and featuring Line Of Duty’s Martin Compston, Slow Horses’ Aimée-Ffion Edwards and Meera Syal.
Described as ‘a darkly funny thriller’ by Sebastian Cardwell, deputy chief content officer for Paramount+, the series will explore how the group’s romances went sour, with a delicious twist when they decide to seek revenge together, all in the name of working cathartically through their shared betrayals.
With filming on the series currently underway, here’s everything you need to know about the show, including more on the plot, the cast and the expected release date.
What is The Revenge Club about?
It’s a compelling story – one we’ve not really seen on screen before – and comes from creator Gabbie Asher, whose previous credits include The Tattooist Of Auschwitz.
Six strangers meet and their paths become entwined when they attend a divorce support group, in which they are all ‘reeling from betrayal and heartbreak’. But as they each tell the story of their relationship breakdown, they quickly transform from ‘therapy-seeking victims into architects of exquisite retribution’.
The six begin to form an unlikely bond and, despite having little in common apart from their shared pain, they enter ‘a pact that will change their lives for ever’. What begins as a cathartic outlet quickly spirals into something far more dangerous than just harmless pranks and ‘the line between justice and murder begins to blur’. The series is also based on the upcoming debut novel The Othello Club by J.D. Pennington.
Sebastian Cardwell says: ‘The Revenge Club is a sharp, stylish and darkly funny thriller, brought to life by a brilliant cast and an exceptional creative team. We’re thrilled to be part of this gripping project and to champion it as a standout addition to our expanding slate of bold, original UK content.’ Meanwhile, Jess Connell from Gaumont UK, who are producing the series, adds: ‘This sharply observed emotional thriller will resonate with anyone who’s ever had their heart broken.’
