The Italian drama centres around Sara (Teresa Saponangelo), a retired secret service agent who finds herself back in the game when her son dies out of the blue and in mysterious circumstances. What is Sara - Woman in the Shadows about?

The six-part series is based on the Le indagini di Sara (The Investigations of Sara) crime novel series by Maurizio de Giovanni. Sara (Teresa Saponangelo) is a quiet, retired secret service agent who has long been out of the game. But, when her son suddenly dies in mysterious circumstances, despite being consumed by grief, she’s forced back into action, determined to find out what happened.

She reconnects with her old colleague Teresa (Claudia Gerini) who agrees to help her – but only if she returns to her old life of espionage. After all, in her former career, Sara was nicknamed "the invisible woman" by her colleagues due to her talent in intelligence work, as well as her expert lipreading skills.

The pair, along with police officer Pardo (Flavio Furno) and photographer Viola (Chiara Celotto), who also happens to be her late son’s pregnant partner, set out on a mission to uncover the truth. Faced with a web of sinister crimes that grow darker with every revelation, however, Sara’s quest for the truth – and revenge - sees her having to confront some uncomfortable facts about who her son really was.
