When you can’t count on sunshine, there’s one thing you can rely on to boost your mood - and that’s TV. Luckily, June is bringing plenty of great shows with it – and who needs sunshine when you’ve got a ton of binge-worthy dramas to get through, anyway?
From Netflix’s new Succession-esque series, The Waterfront, to the return of Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes’ hit period drama, The Gilded Age, we’ve rounded up 9 must-see shows that are worth tuning into this June. So get comfy and enjoy our pick of the very best...
And Just Like That series 3
And just like that, Carrie (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte (Kristin Davis) are back. First things first, when we left Carrie and her rekindled flame Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) in series two, Aidan told Carrie that, despite their romantic reunion, he needed to take some time to focus on his children. It seems that in series 3, however, he’s still very much in the picture. Carrie is also moving on from her memoir to write fiction and it seems romantic sparks are also about to fly for other characters, too, including Miranda, and Charlotte's daughter Lily (Cathy Ang). Episodes released weekly (every Friday) on Sky Comedy and NOW.
The Gilded Age series 3
Downton Abbey creator Julian Fellowes’ hit period drama is back in bigger, better and even more dramatic fashion. If you’re new to the series, the drama revolves around Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson), a young woman entering 1882 New York City's social scene who finds herself in a war between her old money van Rhijn-Brook aunts (played brilliantly by Christine Baranski and Cynthia Nixon) and their new money Russell family neighbours (played by Morgan Spector and The White Lotus’s Carrie Coon). Things are about to get more than a little rocky in series 3, with arranged marriages, risky business ventures and even divorce all on the cards. Available to watch on Sky Atlantic and NOW on Monday 23rd June.
The Gold series 2
Based on the true story of the real-life Brink's-Mat robbery of 1983, which saw the theft of £26 million worth of gold bullion, the first series of this heist drama received rave reviews when it aired in 2023 and finally, series 2 is coming. Series 1 saw Dominic Cooper and Slow Horses actor Jack Lowden portray two of the robbers, with Hugh Bonneville starring as the detective tasked with tracking them down. Following the conviction of some of those involved in the theft, the second instalment will move the story on, taking inspiration from theories around what happened to the other half of the gold that wasn’t recovered. As the police investigation continues (led once again by Hugh Bonneville’s Brian Boyce), it becomes a tense, high-stakes journey into international money laundering and organised crime. Available to watch on BBC One and BBC iPlayer at 9pm on Sunday 8th June.
Ridley series 2
Mover over AC-12, Line of Duty’s Adrian Dunbar has some urgent crimes to solve in Ridley series 2 before he can return to duty! ITV’s hit series is officially making its way back to our screens – and it seems the actor has a rather big job on his hands. The new four-part instalment will see Dunbar reprise his role as retired detective-turned-police-consultant, Alex Ridley, and he’s got a mysterious vanishing, a major shooting and even a jewellery heist to deal with. The second series will consist of four two-hour-long films – what a treat! Arriving on ITV1 and ITVX this June.
Countdown
If crime dramas are your thing, Prime Video is delivering this month’s top watch. The 13-part series stars Jensen Ackles as Mark Meachum, an LAPD detective who’s recruited to a secret task force investigating the shocking murder (in broad daylight, no less) of an officer within the Department of Homeland Security. As the hunt for the killer gets underway, Mark and his team soon uncover a plot far more sinister than anyone could have imagined, kicking off a race against time to save a city of millions. It’s gripping stuff. Available to watch on Prime Video from Wednesday 25th June.
The Bear series 4
The doors of TV’s most chaotic kitchen are opening once again as Disney+’s hit chef drama returns. If need filling in, the popular drama is set in a street corner sandwich shop, which, for owner Carmy (Jeremy Allen White), chef Sydney (Ayo Edebiri) and the gang, is much more than a business. It's family history, multiple livelihoods and a desperate strive towards greatness in the restaurant game. Of course, things are never smooth sailing and not just in the kitchen as the drama extends far beyond the doors of the shop and into the personal lives of each of the main characters – as you’ll see in series 4! Available to watch on Disney+ from Thursday 26th June.
The Waterfront
If you fancy meeting a good old-fashioned dysfunctional family, you’ll find it in Netflix’s new Succession-esque drama, The Waterfront. Inspired by true events and set against the backdrop of coastal North Carolina, the series introduces us to the fictional Buckley family, who rule over a wealthy fishing empire, the success of which has extended their power beyond the local fishing industry and into other lucrative local businesses, including the town's restaurant scene. They’ve pulled themselves up from nothing, but now their power is being taken away from them bit by bit – and they’ll do anything to hold onto it. Available to watch on Netflix from Thursday 19th June.
Suspicion
Have you ever thought what would happen if your child was involved in a terrifying abduction? How about if you were at the scene of the incident and accused of the crime itself? Those are the themes of Suspicion, which was originally released on Apple TV+ in 2022 and ITVX has recently snapped up. The eight-part drama revolves around the disappearance of American businesswoman Katherine Newman’s (Uma Thurman) son Leonardo, who's kidnapped from a New York hotel. The eye of suspicion quickly falls on five seemingly ordinary British citizens who were at the hotel on the night in question – but what if they were simply in the wrong place at the wrong time? An utterly compelling watch. Available to watch on ITVX from Sunday 15th June.
Smoke
Another one for crime drama fans, Apple TV+’s new detective series is created and written by US crime novelist Dennis Lehane (Shutter Island, Gone Baby Gone) and is, once again, by true events. The nine-episode drama follows two investigators, enigmatic arson expert Dave Gudsen (Taron Egerton), and haunted detective Michelle Calderone (Jurnee Smollett), who are on the trail of two serial arsonists. According to the official synopsis, their race to stop them "ignites a twisted game of secrets and suspicions." Rafe Spall also stars. Available to watch on Apple TV+ from Friday 27th June.
