What is The Morning Show about?

The Morning Show was inspired by Top of the Morning: Inside the Cutthroat World of Morning TV, written by CNN's Brian Stelter and centres around the fictional newsroom of US breakfast show, The Morning Show. The series follows two very different career women in journalism: Alex Levy (Jennifer Aniston), the co-anchor of The Morning Show, and Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon), a passionate local reporter. Their worlds collide during a morning segment in the midst of a me-too scandal, with the fall out bringing them both unexpected consequences and opportunities within the tumultuous and scheming business of television. The show hasn't been afraid to tackle real world issues and events in the script, including the pandemic and January 6 riots.

What has happened in The Morning Show so far?

In series one, Alex Levy's (Jennifer Aniston) world is turned upside down when her co-anchor and friend at The Morning Show, Mitch Kessler (Steve Carrel) is embroiled in a me-too scandal, leading to him being removed from the show. We see the professional as well as personal fall out for both Alex and Mitch after the news, including the impact on their friendship and respective families.

Meanwhile, after a tense interview on The Morning Show opposite Alex, local reporter Bradley Jackson (Reese Witherspoon) finds herself announced as the surprise replacement to Mitch, after Alex panics and announces it during an event. The duo find themselves bound together as they go along with the spontaneous decision, and lead the The Morning Show together. Of course, with very different professional approaches and views on almost everything, the pair butt heads as they try to find a way forward and bring the disgraced show into the future.

Behind the scenes, there's plenty more drama, back-stabbing and scheming. There are attempts from rival networks to poach other presenters from the show, a relationship between a young staff member and the older weatherman, and coverups from Mitch's misdeeds which lead to devastating consequences.

Series 2 saw the team face Mitch's unexpected death when he drove off a cliff, after connecting with a documentary maker and seemingly coming to terms with the harm his actions had caused. Alex faced multiple challenges including an expose book on the network with her and Mitch on the cover (which Bradley's expert interviewing of the author manages to turn around) as well as contracting COVID 19, as the series set in 2020. Bradley, on the other hand, had issues of her own, when her brother Hal showed up in a bad state because of his drug use and then Cory Ellison (president of the news division) announced he was in love with her.

In the third and most recent series so far, we saw more real world events being tackled, including the riots at the Capitol on January 6 2021. Once again, there are ethical dilemmas to be faced, with Bradley deciding to hide her brother Hal's part in the riot during her reporting. By the series finale, Alex managed to convince Bradley to turn herself into the FBI with Hal and we saw them walk tentatively into the building together. Meanwhile, a cyber attack had rocked the station, leading to the introduction of tech billionaire Paul Marks (Jon Hamm) seeking to invest the necessary cash - and he also became Alex's complicated love interest. Throughout the series, we saw Alex battling for more control before she manages to successfully pitch a merger between their network, UBA and the rival network NBN, outsmarting Paul in the process.

What will happen in The Morning Show series 4?

Series 2 will pick up nearly two years after the events of the third series. It's now spring 2024 and the network merger is finally complete. In typical The Morning Show fashion, we'll see the newsroom grappling with topics which feel scarily relatable to modern day reality in the latest series. While exact plot lines haven't been revealed, we do know the overarching themes and obstacles the newsroom will come up against.

Apple explains that "the newsroom must grapple with newfound responsibility" after the merger, which includes navigating "hidden motives," and "corporate cover ups". The series will explore "the elusive nature of truth in a polarised America" in a world which is "rife with deepfakes" and "conspiracy theories". Ultimately, the characters must decide who can really be trusted and what is "actually real".
