When it comes to crime dramas, there are some you just can’t beat and one of those is ITV’s Grantchester. The beloved show has given us 9 brilliant instalments since it first aired in 2014 and we’re pleased to report that we’ve got an exciting sneak peek at the surprisingly dramatic 10th series!

If you're new to the series, it revolves around an unlikely crime-solving duo in the form of DI Geordie Keating (Robson Green) and Reverend Alphy Kotteram (Rishi Nair), the latter having replaced Tom Brittney's Reverend Will Devenport in series 9. It makes for seriously addictive viewing as we watch the pair's sleuthing skills in action and, judging by the new pictures, series 10 is going to be no different.

Ahead of series 10’s arrival on our screens, here’s everything you need to know about it, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.

What is ITV's Grantchester about?

The beloved detective series, which first aired in 2014, is based on James Runcie’s collection of short stories, The Grantchester Mysteries. Set in the 1950s in the Cambridgeshire village of Grantchester, the first instalment followed Anglican vicar and former Scots Guards officer Sidney Chambers (James Norton) who formed an unlikely crime-solving partnership with Detective Inspector Geordie Keating (Robson Green).

After four series, the fifth instalment introduced Tom Brittney as Reverend Will Devenport, DI Keating’s new sidekick. However, in 2023, Tom announced he’d be taking a step back from the show and we saw his final scenes play out earlier this year in series 9. That meant there was room for a new vicar in the form of Rishi Nair, who has since stepped into the shoes of Reverend Alphy Kottaram.

“[Alphy] is anti-police. He has this kind of perception about the institution. Growing up as a brown man in the ‘40s and ‘50s in Britain, his experience with the police would have been very different to the previous two vicars,” Rishi told the Radio Times ahead of his character’s arrival.

"So, he has this kind of perception about them, and he has this personality trait that anyone that abuses their power, or anyone in a position of power that abuses that, he always stands up to that morally," he continued.

What will happen in Grantchester series 10?

The new series will see Robson Green and Rishi Nair reprise their roles as DI Geordie Keating and Reverend Alphy Kottaram respectively. The pair continue to work together as a crime-solving duo in scenic Grantchester – but they must also support each other through changing times, family struggles, and personal secrets.

According to the synopsis, "This season, Alphy feels like he’s found a home, but he’s forced to confront secrets he’s kept close to his chest. Will he be able to let anyone fully in, or must he confront truths about himself first?"

The newly released images show the detective duo looking somewhat jovial, despite the dramatic series ahead, as well Miss Scott (Melissa Johns) and Larry (Bradley Hall) having what looks like a rather tense conversation, Mrs. C (Tessa Peake-Jones) either infuriated or bemused by Reverend Alphy, and they also confirm AI Weaver’s return as Leonard Finch.

Given series 9 saw Tom Brittney's exit and the arrival of a brand-new vicar, we'd half expected series 10 to be a little less dramatic. But it seems there's plenty of drama in store for us!

Is ITV's Grantchester any good?

Yes – it’s just the sort of crime drama you want to switch on after a long day. Or, in fact, at any time of day. Viewers and critics have called it "delightful", "a revelation", "unbeatable" and "Victoria sponge with a tablespoon on battery acid". Admittedly though, we do still slightly miss James Norton who played Sidney Chambers in series 1-4.

How can I watch Grantchester series 10?

Grantchester series 10 will air on MASTERPIECE on PBS in the US on Sunday 15th June, before arriving on ITV in the UK in early 2026. Sadly, that means UK viewers have a while to wait, but in the meantime, you can catch up on series 1-9 on ITVX.
