It’s official – the Nevermore Academy is opening its doors once again as Netflix’s hit series, Wednesday, returns for a much darker series 2. The new instalment, which arrives on our screens this week, sees Wednesday Addams (Jenna Ortega) plunged into a new bone-chilling mystery. Oh, and did we mention that guest star Joanna Lumley makes a frighteningly good appearance, too?

According to the show’s creators Alfred Gough and Miles Millar, in the new series, "Wednesday’s journey is darker and more complex as she navigates family, friends, new mysteries, and old adversaries, propelling her headlong into another year at Nevermore". And the trailer, which you can watch below, appears to confirm it.

Ahead of the show's eagerly-awaited return to our screens, here’s everything you need to know abut the new series, including the plot, cast and how to watch it.

What is Netflix's Wednesday about?

If you’re new to the series, let’s start at the beginning. The show is based on the character Wednesday Addams from, you guessed it, The Addams Family, and is directed by none other than Tim Burton. Wednesday is a student at Nevermore Academy and the ultimate lone wolf. We follow her time there, including her attempts to master her psychic ability, thwart a killing spree that’s terrorised the local town, and solve the mystery that embroiled her parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), 25 years ago.

The first series also saw Christina Ricci, who played Wednesday Addams in the film The Addams Family and its sequel, star as Nevermore Academy’s science teacher and Wedneday dorm mother, Marilyn Thornhill. Plus, we met Tyler (Hunter Doohan), a “normie” who struck up an unlikely friendship with Wednesday. No spoilers, but let’s just say this boy next door actually had a very dark past.

What will happen in Wednesday series 2?

The new eight-part series takes us back to Nevermore Academy, where Wednesday Addams is prowling the Gothic halls once again. And, according to Netflix, plenty of fresh foes and woes await her.

This time round, Wednesday must navigate family, friends and old adversaries. We’ll see her joined at school by a new member of the Addams family: her little brother Pugsley (Isaac Ordonez), who begins his own Nevermore journey. Their parents, Morticia (Catherine Zeta-Jones) and Gomez Addams (Luis Guzmán), are also back and will also have an increased presence on campus — and the latter is torturous, to say the least, for Wednesday.

According to the official synopsis, "Armed with her signature razor-sharp wit and deadpan charm, Wednesday is also plunged into a new bone-chilling supernatural mystery." In a newly-released trailer, Wednesday is also seen visiting her nemesis (no, their friendship didn't last), Tyler (Hunter Doohan), in the asylum where he’s being held.

The new series will also introduce us to some very exciting guest stars, including Joanna Lumley, who joins the cast as Hester Frump, Morticia’s mother and Wednesday’s closest ally. "The idea of bringing Hester, Morticia’s mother, into the fold this season was something we were so excited about," says creator Miles Millar.

"The first day on set when Joanna walked on, she just was Hester, and she nailed every single line, and it’s just so delicious. She’s perfect and hilarious. That Wednesday-Hester relationship is unique; you see a twinkle in both their eyes when they’re together on-screen. I think everyone is going to fall in love with Hester."

Joanna has described the experience as "wonderful", explaining that "I get to wear many, many huge wigs, one on top of the other — and lots of quite constraining clothes, so I love it."

Yes – and we have a feeling series 2 is going to be even better than series 1 judging by its guest stars and "darker" plot. When series 1 premiered in 2022, it became the second most-watched English-language Netflix series, received two Golden Globe nominations and won four Emmy Awards - in case you needed any more convincing.

How can I watch Wednesday series 2?

Good news – the wait is almost over! Wednesday series 2 will launch in two parts on 6th August (part 1) and 3rd September 2025 (part 2), exclusively on Netflix.
