When Nicole Kidman’s Nine Perfect Strangers arrived on our screens in 2021, it was the wellness retreat drama we didn’t know we needed. Perhaps, in part, because this retreat wasn’t all boring green smoothies and hot yoga (yawn), it was wellness gone very wrong. And it seems things are about to go even more wrong, because the drama is returning for what its stars and creators are calling a “wild” second series.

Despite a not-so-hopeful series 1 ending for retreat founder Masha (Kidman), it seems she’s successfully found her way out of her rather messy predicament (no spoilers!) and is now running a retreat in the Austrian Alps. Cue the arrival of nine new strangers (Henry Golding and Christine Baranski are among them) who are about to put their sanity in Masha’s hands. Good luck to them is all we can say!

With the new series due to arrive on Amazon Prime Video this spring, here’s everything you need to know about the exciting second instalment…

What to read next

What is Nine Perfect Strangers about?

Based on Liane Moriarty’s (Big Little Lies) 2018 novel of the same name, the first series introduces us to Nicole Kidman’s Masha, the director of wellness retreat, Tranquillum House (in the fictional Cabrillo, California), which promises to transform and heal the guests who stay there. Nine stressed city dwellers (played by the likes of Melissa McCarthy, Luke Evans and Samara Weaving) pitch up in the hope of being "fixed" – but let's just say this resort isn’t quite what it seems.

Each guest has a wound they need healed (we’re talking themes of divorce, child suicide and addiction), but Masha isn't exactly into traditional practices. There’s food deprivation, micro-dosing and the slaughtering of a pet goat - and that's not even the half of it. We should also mention that one of the guests, Lars (Luke Evans) is an undercover journalist, investigating Masha and her “unusual” methods following the death of a previous guest. So there’s also that small matter to deal with, too.

We won't spoil it for those who haven't seen the first series, but things didn't exactly end brilliantly for Masha...

What will happen in Nine Perfect Strangers series 2?

While the first series was based on Liane Moriarty’s novel, this series isn’t based on any book at all – so the possibilities are endless. However, we do know that we say goodbye to the fictional town of Cabrillo, California and hello to the Austrian Alps. We’re also introduced to nine new strangers who enter a wellness retreat they’ll likely regret booking into the minute they get there. Oh, and very importantly, Masha is back!

According to the official synopsis: “Nine new strangers connected in ways they could never imagine are invited by mysterious guru, Masha Dmitrichenko (Kidman), to join a transformational wellness retreat in the Austrian Alps.” If you’ve watched the first series, you’ll know that “transformational” is the key word here.

“Over the course of a week, she takes them to the brink. Will they make it? Will she? Masha is willing to try anything in the interest of healing everyone involved, including herself.”

Co-creator David E. Kelley said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight that, while he couldn’t give away any plot points, “the micro-dosing is still going on, so the behaviour will be wild.”

Kelley isn’t the only person who’s described the second series as wild, either. When asked by Deadline what we can expect from the eight new episodes, Nicole Kidman said: “Swiss Alps and crazy! Hold on tight because it’s gonna get wild.”

Something tells us we’re in for quite the ride…
