Suranne Jones is one of those people who, admittedly, we’d watch in almost anything - but her latest TV role has got us especially excited. The Vigil actor is starring as none other than the British Prime Minister in Netflix’s high-stakes political thriller Hostage – and it might just be her most ruthless role yet. According to writer Matt Charman, the series is going to blow audiences away when it's released this August, and judging by the trailer and new images that have just been released, we have a feeling he's right!

The upcoming thriller, which you can see the trailer and first look images of below, will see Suranne step into the shoes of Abigail Dalton, the newly-elected PM whose time in office is far from straightforward. With a major healthcare crisis on her hands, a fierce rivalry with French President Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy) and a kidnapping (involving her husband, no less) to deal with, it's safe to say we can expect quite the thrilling series.

While await the show's imminent arrival on our screens, we've got all the inside details about Suranne's new series, including the plot, cast and release date.

What is Hostage about?

The five-part series will introduce us to Abigail Dalton (Suranne Jones), the recently elected British Prime Minister who’s struggling to hold office thanks to a healthcare crisis, as well as Vivienne Toussaint (Julie Delpy), the first female French President campaigning for re-election no matter what - even if it requires making controversial policy decisions about France’s borders.

According to the official synopsis, “a summit between the two women could be the answer to their prayers, if they can agree. But when Dalton’s husband is kidnapped and Toussaint is blackmailed, they both face unimaginable choices. Forced into a fierce rivalry where their political futures, and lives, might hang in the balance, can they work together to uncover the plot that threatens them both?”

The series comes from Bridge of Spies writer Matt Charman and, as well as leading the show, Suranne will also act as one of the series’ executive producers. Matt has said of writing the series: “I’ve been dying to find the right story to tell with Suranne and I honestly believe what she’s done with this character is going to blow the Netflix audience away. An embattled British PM in the middle of a fight for her country and her family – she’s fierce, ruthless and you can’t take your eyes off of her.”

Suranne added: “I’m thrilled to be on Netflix, in something I’m really proud of. It’s been something I’ve wanted to do for a long time. We’d talked about projects previously, but for me it was about finding the right thing. Hostage was perfect - me and Matt together backed up by this brilliant, supportive team. I loved it.”
