While a neighbourhood dispute might not sound like the most enticing subject for a TV drama, Channel 5 is bringing us a new series about exactly that – and trust us, we think it’s going to be rather good. Described as “a drama full of paranoia”, The Feud is the engrossing domestic thriller about a "neighbour war" that will play on every emotion.
Emma (Jill Halfpenny) and John Barnett (Rupert Penry-Jones) are the happy couple at the centre of the series, living an idyllic life on Shelbury Drive. That is, until they decide to add a kitchen extension to their house. It turns out all is not quite as rosy on this street as we’ve been led to believe - and not everyone is quite as "nice" as they seem.
With less than a fortnight to go until The Feud arrives on our screens, here's everything you need to know about the upcoming series…
What is The Feud about?
The six-part domestic thriller introduces us to Emma and John Barnett, played by Jill Halfpenny and Rupert Penry-Jones who, along with their teenage daughter Beth, played by newcomer Megan Trower, live a seemingly idyllic life on Shelbury Drive. They’re close friends with their neighbours, Sonia (Amy Nuttall) and Alan (Ray Fearon), and despite their foibles, are also fond of older couple, Derek (James Fleet) and Barbara (Tessa Peake-Jones).
However, the close friendships in this apparently peaceful street prove to be not quite as harmonious as they seem. When Emma and John decide to add a kitchen extension to their house, things quickly spin drastically out of control. As objections to the plans are raised, unexpected skeletons and life-threatening secrets start to rise to the surface.
According to the official synopsis, "laced with menace, The Feud reveals how Emma’s aspirational dream turns sharply into obsession, paranoia, and fear. One decision sets in motion events that have unforeseeable consequences for both her and the people living on her street."
Jill Halfpenny has said of her role: "The spiral that we see Emma’s world take in The Feud, from one seemingly innocent situation to life altering revelations, is something I can’t wait to dive into!"
Channel 5’s Paul Testar says: "Neighbourly disputes happen every day. The Feud takes that premise and runs with it to its extreme limit. What starts as an innocuous renovation triggers an extraordinary sequence of events."
