In fact, they might even beat Motherland, too. So, throw your plans out the window and make way for our pick of the best...
Schitt’s Creek
Chances are, you’ve heard of Moira Rose, the iconic Schitt's Creek character played by Catherine O'Hara, even if you haven’t yet watched the series. The brilliant rags-to-riches sitcom in which she features was created by father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy and follows the Rose family – Moira, Johnny (Eugene Levy), and their adult children David (Daniel Levy) and Alexis (Annie Murphy) – who, after going bankrupt, are reduced to living in a ramshackle motel in a town they once bought as a joke: Schitt's Creek. It’s truly hilarious and, quite frankly, Moira - with her wardrobe of wigs and explicable accent - deserves a sitcom of her own. Available to watch on Netflix.
Catastrophe
Most of us will know that Sharon Horgan is some kind of genius when it comes to sitcoms and her unflinchingly honest series, Catastrophe, proves the point perfectly. The show follows Rob Norris (Rob Delaney) and Sharon Morris (Sharon Horgan) who find themselves making a go of a live together after Sharon unexpectedly becomes pregnant following their fling. Capturing the human experience in all its messy, chaotic, hilarious glory – the series celebrates the small, touching moments of a relationship, but also rejoices in the surge of anger you feel when your partner puts the empty milk carton back in the fridge. Available to watch on Netflix.
Trying
Andy Wolton’s British comedy is so good there’s four series of it to get through – and trust, it won’t take you long at all. Nikki (Esther Smith) and Jason (Rafe Spall) are a couple with a dream - they want to become parents, only nature won’t allow them. So, they decide to adopt, not just one, but two children. With their dysfunctional friends, dramatic relatives and the ups and downs of parenting to navigate, it proves to be quite the adventure. Available to watch on Apple TV+.
Mandy
If you’re a Motherland fan, Diane Morgan’s BBC sitcom is not to be missed. Not only has she created, written and directed it, she also stars as the titular hapless job seeker Mandy Carter – who better to play the lead? In each episode we see Mandy attempt a series of short-lived jobs and let’s just say they often end in disaster. "I don't think there's enough stupid comedy," Diane has said and thankfully, she’s provided us with some. So, if you’re looking for a comedy that will make you laugh out loud, this is it. Available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Am I Being Unreasonable?
If you haven’t already binged the two series of Daisy May Cooper’s Am I Being Unreasonable? in their entirety, now’s the time to do so. It’s a somewhat twisted comedy which follows Nic (played by Daisy), a mum stuck in a depressing marriage, while grieving a loss she can’t share with anyone. Only her son, Ollie, keeps her going; but when Jen (Selin Hizli) arrives in town, her life is lit up with laughter, and her dark secret starts to bubble up. Trust us, it will bring you a serious amount of joy, laughter and possibly a bit of horror. Available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Rev
An oldie (circa 2010) but a goodie, the cast alone is worth tuning in to Rev for. Tom Hollander is the country vicar (otherwise known as Adam) who's relocated to a parish in inner-city London, while Olivia Colman is as brilliant as ever as his long-suffering solicitor wife, Alex. While Adam is a priest, he’s also an ordinary human being and his reluctance to turn anyone (no really, anyone) away from his pastoral care mean’s he’s faced with his fair share of moral challenges. All three series are truly superb and punctuated with some surprisingly touching moments. Available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Colin from Accounts
This Australian comedy is just what you want to come home to after a long day. Ashley (Harriet Dyer) and Gordon (Patrick Brammall) are a medical student and microbrewery owner who are brought together by a car accident and an injured dog. Their dysfunctional romance plays over the course of two series (we're longing for a third) with their backstories and issues taking centre stage. It’s heartfelt, relatable and funny – all at once. Available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
This Country
Another Daisy May Cooper special, this documentary-style sitcom is the creation of Daisy and her brother Charlie, who also star in the series. Kerry and Lee `Kurtan' Mucklowe are cousins living in a very small, very boring village in rural Gloucestershire. Their time is spent irritating the local vicar and doing, well, just about anything to try to cure their boredom. Expect a lot of laughs and plenty of unforgettable quotes. Available to watch on BBC iPlayer.
Mum
We love a Lesley Manville series and we’d argue that Mum is one of her finest TV performances. The series has an approval rating of 100% on Rotten Tomatoes and for good reason. Lesley stars as 59-year-old Cathy, who’s trying to rebuild her life following the death of her husband. Admittedly, the storyline doesn’t sound all that funny and the series may indeed make you cry, but it’s also wonderfully life-affirming and there’s a lot more humour to be enjoyed in it than you might believe. Available to watch on ITVX.
