Hallelujah! Sharon Horgan has answered our TV prayers and she’s teaming up with Oscar-winning actress Rachel Weisz for a brand-new Netflix comedy series. Much like her smash hit Bad Sisters, Vladimir is set to be another brilliant dark comedy - and, truth be told, we’re already obsessed!
Based on Julia May Jonas’s 2022 novel of the same name about a woman whose life spirals when she develops an obsession with her alluring coworker, Horgan and Weisz will both executive produce the series, while Weisz will also star. And, if their “powerhouse” collaboration is anything to go by, we're unlikely to be the only ones who are obsessed with it.
Here’s everything you need to know about Vladimir, including the plot, cast and when it might be released...
What is Vladimir about?
The eight-part series is an adaptation of the critically acclaimed book, Vladimir, by Julia May Jonas. Jonas’s debut novel was released in 2022 and received rave reviews, telling the story of a beloved English professor facing a slew of accusations against her professor husband by former students. Complicated, yes, but even more so when she develops an obsession of her own.
According to the official synopsis for the new Netflix series, "as a woman’s life unravels, she becomes obsessed with her captivating new colleague. Full of sexy secrets, dark humour and complex characters, Vladimir is about what happens when a woman is hell-bent on turning her fantasies into reality."
How closely the plot follows the book remains to be seen, but Jonas is co-writing the series, so we wouldn't expect it to veer too far from its origins. Sharon Horgan, who we last saw in her dark comedy Bad Sisters (see above), is an executive producer on the series, has also shared that she “fell in love with Julia’s writing from the very first paragraph.”
She added: “I feel very lucky and incredibly excited for Merman to bring Vladimir to life alongside Small Dog. Getting to partner with Netflix and have Rachel attached is a thrill, and testament to the brilliance of the scripts.”
Tracey Pakosta, vice president of comedy series at Netflix has teased that it may well be our new TV obsession. "With Kate Robin’s expertise in crafting layered, darkly comedic female stories, a script that deftly examines the complexity of attraction and moral ambiguities, and the incomparable Rachel Weisz leading the cast, this project is a powerhouse collaboration of talented women," she says. “We can’t wait for our fans to be as obsessed with Vladimir as we are."
Who's starring in Vladimir?
As it stands Rachel Weisz (The Favourite, The Mummy), who will also executive produce the series, is the only confirmed cast member. However, we do know a bit more about the people behind the series. Kate Robin (The Affair, Dead to Me) will co-write with author Julia May Jonas, and both will also executive produce with Sharon Horgan, Stacy Greenberg, and Kira Carstensen, as well as Jason Winer and Jon Radler.
How can I watch Vladimir?
Netflix hasn't yet shared a release date for Vladimir, but we do know that filming hasn't yet started on the series, so we'd expect it to arrive at some point in 2026. In the meantime, you can stream Sharon Horgan's other dark comedy, Bad Sisters, on Apple TV+.
