If you've been lucky enough to witness the brilliance of Eve Myles in the BBC's Keeping Faith or Paramount+'s The Crow Girl, what we're about to tell you is almost guaranteed to put a smile on your face. The Welsh actress is returning to our screens in ITV's intoxicating new thriller, Cold Water - and according to Chris Fry, Managing Director & Executive Producer of Sister, the production company behind the series, it's a show that will "surprise, horrify and delight in equal measure."
The upcoming series follows John (Andrew Lincoln), a resentful stay-at-home dad whose new start in the rural idyll of Coldwater takes a very dark turn after he meets his seemingly charming neighbour, Tommy (Ewen Bremner). Myles plays Tommy’s local vicar wife Rebecca, while the show also marks The Walking Dead star Andrew Lincoln’s long-awaited return to British drama.
Can’t wait to tune in? Neither can we! Here’s everything you need to know ahead of Cold Water's arrival on ITV…
What's the plot of Cold Water?
The six-part thriller is largely set in the fictional Scottish village of Coldwater, where depressed man John (Andrew Lincoln) is shocked to find himself in middle age, quietly raging at his life as a stay-at-home dad. His identity crisis comes to a head when he fails to intervene in a violent confrontation in a playground, which triggers a shift.
John ups and moves his family to the seemingly rural idyll of Coldwater in a bid to get as far away from London as possible. This is also where he’s befriended by next-door neighbour Tommy (Ewen Bremner), a charming, confident man, devoted husband to the local vicar Rebecca (Myles).
The official synopsis describes Tommy as “a man of faith, a pillar of the community and self-appointed leader of the village’s all-male book group” – and John is both impressed and slightly fascinated by him. John's wife Fiona (Indira Varma), however, despises him.
The synopsis continues: “As a successful former chef hoping to launch a new venture in Coldwater, Fiona sees the move as an opportunity to leave the past behind them. To not only re-build their lives as a family but re-ignite the long-lost spark in their fading marriage.
“When her husband’s relationship with their enigmatic new neighbour becomes increasingly intense, Fiona’s suspicions are aroused. She is unconvinced Tommy is all he seems to be.
“But John remains blissfully unaware that Tommy is harbouring horrifying secrets, and it’s only after a series of unsettling incidents start to occur that John begins to wonder who the real Tommy actually is. And when John’s long-repressed rage comes to a head with disastrous results, he soon finds himself unexpectedly indebted to his new friend.”
Writer, creator and executive producer David Ireland has described it as "intoxicating", explaining: "Cold Water started with a question I was asking myself. Where do I want to live – the countryside or the city? Such an innocent beginning, but from it came this dark, funny, twisted thriller. I was delighted when Sister loved the script and thrilled when ITV decided to commission it. And I’m amazed we’ve managed to attract such a peerless cast, led by the formidable Andrew Lincoln. I hope viewers will be find it intoxicating."
With a brilliant cast and a compelling storyline, something tells us this is going to be an unmissable series.
