Finally, the news we’ve been waiting for has arrived: BBC One’s Vigil is returning for a third series – and thankfully, so are our favourite cast members. Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie are reprising their roles as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre and according to Leslie, the pair are embarking on their most dangerous mission to date.

The hit series premiered in 2021, when Silva was enlisted to solve a murder on a navy submarine in Scottish waters – and it’s become one of the most successful dramas of the decade. Series 3 will launch us straight back into the action, with what Leslie is calling “Vigil's most high-stakes mission yet”.

Can’t wait to tune in? Here’s everything you need to know about the next instalment before it airs…

What to read next

What is Vigil about?

From the makers of Line of Duty and Bodyguard, the first series of the crime drama saw Suranne Jones’s DCI Amy Silva called on board the submarine HMS Vigil to investigate a suspicious death, as well as look into the mysterious disappearance of a Scottish fishing trawler. It may well have been 2021’s most gripping series, so it was hardly surprising when it returned for a second instalment in 2023.

The second series saw a Royal Air Force prototype combat drone compromised and kill several soldiers during a joint demonstration in Scotland. It was up to Silva's team to find the perpetrator, with a major conspiracy finally revealed in the last episode.

What will happen in Vigil series 3?

The new six-part series will see Suranne Jones and Rose Leslie reprise their roles as DCI Amy Silva and DI Kirsten Longacre. Their new case takes them to a remote Arctic research station, where a member of a covert British special forces mission has been shot dead.

According to the official synopsis, "Amy and Kirsten will need to catch the killer and diffuse a potential international confrontation, driven by a land-grab for energy and resources in the changing polar climate, with both their careers and relationship on the line."
