Before we let you in on some of Paramount+’s best-kept secrets, we must warn you: you may need to cancel some plans after reading this article. No, really. The streamer has a whole host of brilliant thrillers that were quite simply made to be binged – and in fact, we had a bit of a hard time narrowing it down to just 7.
From a gripping psychological thriller starring Vicky McClure to a crime series set in a world where men are electronically tagged and have to stay inside after 7pm, we’ve hand-picked the shows that will leave you wanting to go nowhere other than back to the sofa. So, grab the remote, and read on for our pick the best thrillers currently available to binge on Paramount+…
Insomnia
Truth be told, we'll watch anything starring Vicky McClure. Playing a successful lawyer who fears that she’s losing her mind after suffering from sleep deprivation is no mean feat, but typically, Vicky does it effortlessly. Based on a psychological thriller by Sarah Pinborough — whose novel Behind Her Eyes was adapted by Netflix in 2021 - the drama centres on Vicky’s Emma in the run-up to her 40th birthday and leads to a rather disturbing unravelling of her life. Brilliantly acted with some genius twists.
Rabbit Hole
A spy series starring 24’s Kiefer Sutherland? We’re sold. The eight-part series see the actor play John Weir, a corporate espionage expert who finds himself caught up in an enormous conspiracy. In fact, he’s framed for murder by powerful forces with the ability to influence and control populations. It's a heart-pounding watch that we're placing firmly on the 'must-watch-if-you-love-spy-thrillers' list.
The Castaways
The adaptation of Lucy Clarke’s bestselling novel of the same name sees sisters Lori (Sheridan Smith) and Erin (Celine Buckens) plan the "holiday of a lifetime" in Fiji – only, it isn’t quite what they’d had in mind. After a huge fight, Erin doesn’t in fact board the flight to their tropical resort and the plane – with Lori on board – never arrives at its destination. Months later, no wreckage has been found, no survivors discovered, but Lori is alive on a remote island with her fellow passengers – and she can’t trust anyone.
Yellowjackets
It’s been nominated for 10 Emmy Awards to date and, in our humble opinion, Yellowjackets deserves every single nomination (and award) it gets. Now entering its third series, the part-psychological thriller, part-survival epic follows a champion New Jersey football team, AKA the Yellowjackets, whose plane crashes in the Canadian wilderness on the way to a national tournament. Split into two timelines, we follow the girls stranded as teens, trying to survive in the wilderness (there’s hunting and butchery involved), as well as their adult selves in the present day, having tried to move on from the trauma of their past. Expect a bit of gore, but ultimately, glorious viewing.
The Crow Girl
Looking for a series that's truly spine-tingling? We’d highly recommend The Crow Girl. The chilling story follows DCI Jeanette Kilburn (Eve Myles) who has a murder investigation on her hands unlike anything she’s dealt with before. It starts with just one body: beaten, mummified, full of the anaesthetic Lidocaine – and then dumped at a random public location around Bristol. But then, more start to show up. Cue the start of something truly sinister. Described by Eve Myles as "brutal" and "uncomfortable" – we have to say, she’s hit the nail on the head.
Curfew
This brilliant thriller is set in a world in which men are electronically tagged and have to stay inside after 7pm – and it’s compelling, to say the least. The idea is to curtail male violence, but things are tested by an events that occurs after the new law is enacted. A woman is brutally murdered during the curfew period (7am to 7pm) and her body is left – deliberately - outside a women’s safety centre. Seasoned officer, Pamela Green (played by Sarah Parish) is convinced the crime couldn’t have been committed by anyone but a male suspect – but is she right?
The Agency
Looking for another brilliant spy thriller? Here it is. Martian (the wonderful Michael Fassbender), is a CIA agent who spent years undercover in Sudan, before being called back to HQ in London. When the love (played by Jodie Turner-Smith) he left behind reappears, romance reignites – and his career, his real identity and his mission are pitted against his heart. Produced by George Clooney, the star-studded cast also features Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere.
