In case you haven’t heard the news, there's a lot of good TV coming this year – and Netflix has just made a serious contribution to the list. The streamer has released its slate for the year ahead and let’s just say we might not be leaving the house all that much in the coming months.
From a White House whodunnit (from none other than Bridgerton’s Shonda Rhimes) to an adaptation of Judy Blume's groundbreaking 1975 novel, Forever, there's plenty to look forward to. So much in fact that we've decided to break it down to determine what's actually worth watching. So, if you’re not quite sure where to start, look no further...
The Residence
Top of our list of shows-we-literally-can’t-wait-for? The Residence. The Shonda Rhimes-produced murder mystery is an unpredictable whodunnit set in the upstairs, downstairs, and backstairs of the White House. 132 rooms. 157 suspects. One dead body. So who did it? Arriving on 20th March
Agatha Christie's The Seven Dials
Described by Netflix as a “witty, epic and fast-paced drama from the Queen of Crime, Agatha Christie,” we’ve got extremely high hopes for this one. Set in England in 1925, the drama follows a lavish country house party where a practical joke appears to have gone horribly, murderously wrong. And it’s up to the unlikeliest of sleuths - the fizzingly inquisitive Lady Eileen “Bundle” Brent - to unravel a chilling plot that will change her life. Oh, and did we mention Helena Bonham Carter is starring in it? Arriving this year
Adolescence
A new Stephen Graham crime drama? Yes please! This four-parter tells the story of how a family’s world is turned upside down when 13-year-old Jamie Miller (Owen Cooper) is arrested for the murder of a teenage girl who goes to his school. With a cast including Graham as Jamie’s father and ‘appropriate adult’, Ashley Walters as Detective Inspector Luke Bascombe and Erin Doherty as the clinical psychologist assigned to Jamie’s case, we’re sold. Arriving on 13th March
Nobody Wants This Series 2
Our prayers have officially been answered. The "hot rabbi" (Adam Brody) is returning alongside our favourite sex and relationships podcaster Joanne (Kristen Bell). Following the romantic cliffhanger ending of season one, which saw Noah (Brody) and Joanne decide to continue their relationship despite lingering questions over whether Joanne would convert to Judaism, we’re deeply invested in what comes next for the couple. Arriving this year
Black Mirror Series 7
We can always rely on Charlie Brooker for a mind-altering watch and the seventh series of his dark, satirical anthology series, Black Mirror, is likely to be no exception. Six brand new episodes are coming featuring a cast including Peter Capaldi, Emma Corrin, Harriet Walter and Rashida Jones set. Sign us right up. Arriving this year
Forever
Looking for a great rom-com to watch? Enter Forever, the adaptation of Judy Blume's groundbreaking 1975 novel, which is being reimagined for a new generation. It’s an epic love story of two Black teens exploring romance and their identities through the awkward journey of being each other’s firsts - and it's set in Los Angeles, 2018. Now this is one we're excited about. Arriving this year
Black Rabbit
Succession meets The Bear in this new drama, which stars and is executive produced by Jason Bateman and Jude Law. Producers have been tight-lipped about the show, but we do know it follows the owner of a New York City hotspot (Law) who allows his turbulent brother (Bateman) back in his life, only to realise he’s opened the door to escalating dangers that threaten to bring down everything he's built. Something tells us this is going to be addictive viewing. Arriving this year
Ginny and Georgia Series 3
If you haven’t seen the first two series of Ginny and Georgia, which tells the story of a free-spirited mother named Georgia (Brianne Howey) who moves to Massachusetts with her kids Ginny (Antonia Gentry) and Austin (Diesel La Torraca), you can still catch up. And we highly recommend you do. In the third series, Georgia has just been arrested for murder during her wedding — ruining her fairy tale ending and putting the spotlight on her family like never before. Arriving on 5th June
Sirens
This female-driven series is being produced by Margot Robbie’s production company LuckyChap and follows Devon (Meghann Fahy), who’s concerned about her sister Simone’s creepy relationship with her new employer, the mysterious socialite and animal activist Michaela Kell (played by Julianne Moore). But when Devon tracks her sister down to confront her, she has no idea what a formidable opponent Michaela will be. Netflix is calling it "an incisive, sexy, and darkly funny exploration of women, power, and class" – which sounds right up our street. Arriving this year
Monster Series 3
Calling all true crime fans, we’re getting another series of Ryan Murphy’s Monster – and it’s set to be every bit as chilling as the last two. Each season of Murphy’s anthology series follows a different real-life killer, with the first season revolving around serial killer Jeffrey Dahmer (Evan Peters) and the second following Lyle and Erik Menendez (portrayed by Alexander Chavez and Cooper Koch). The third will focus on Ed Gein (played by star Charlie Hunman), who inspired movie characters in Psycho and The Texas Chainsaw Massacre’. We did say it would be chilling. Arriving this year
Zero Day
Conspiracy is the name of the game in Hollywood legend Robert De Niro’s first TV series. Both producer and star of the show, he plays former US president George Mullen who's investigating a deadly cyberattack. While dealing with personal demons, George must make sense of the aftermath and bring a nation back from the brink of chaos. Arriving on 20th February
Toxic Town
Based on one of the UK’s biggest environmental scandals, this heartbreaking drama brings to life the story of the people at the heart of the Corby poisonings. Focusing on the mothers, who took on a David and Goliath battle for justice, the series traces through the years of their fight as a terrible truth comes to the surface. We'll be busy mentally preparing ourselves for this one. Arriving on 27th February
Running Point
This 10-episode underdog comedy has Mindy Kaling at the helm, which is always a good sign in our book. Kate Hudson stars as Isla, a woman who’s appointed as the president of her family’s business, the professional basketball team the Los Angeles Waves, when her brother is forced to resign after entering rehab. Ambitious yet often overlooked, Isla must prove to her sceptical brothers, the board, and the larger sports community that she was the right choice for the job. Arriving on 27th February
