You may already have heard about the TV series Yellowstone. It’s taken the US by storm and been described as “one of the greatest shows of all time” – and finally, it’s coming to Netflix. Now in its fifth season, the drama will officially be available to watch on the streamer from 30th January and we couldn’t be more excited about it.
The series launched in 2018 when it introduced viewers to the Dutton family and it’s a bit like Succession, but with a bit more action and set in the American West. You see, the Dutton family own and operate the largest contiguous ranch in the United States, the Yellowstone ranch - and patriarch John Dutton (played by Kevin Costner) will do whatever it takes to protect his land.
It's got all the ingredients of an addictive drama - corruption, bitter rivalries between the Dutton siblings and greedy developers, so it's hardly surprising that the series 5 premiere pulled in a whopping 12.1 million live viewers. Tempted? Here’s everything else you need to know about Yellowstone ahead of its arrival on Netflix…
What is Yellowstone about?
Created by Taylor Sheridan, the hit series is a sort of modern take on the Western genre. The story follows the Dutton family, who own and operate the Yellowstone ranch. Patriarch John Dutton (Kevin Costner) is a sixth-generation homesteader and devoted father who fights to protect his land and legacy from various threats, including land developers, politicians, as well as other ranchers.
The drama also explores the relationships and bitter rivalries between the Dutton siblings - former Navy SEAL Kayce (Luke Grimes), manipulative financier Beth (Kelly Reilly), aspiring politician Jamie (Wes Bentley) and ranch hand Lee (Dave Annable). Very early on in the series, the eldest son of the Dutton family, Lee Dutton, is killed off and ultimately, the siblings begin to turn on each other as the role of John's successor is up for grabs.
The show is based around a working cattle ranch in Montana and the scenery is a real highlight. Think mountain vistas and sprawling countryside. You might also be interested to know that the Yellowstone ranch is actually a real ranch you can visit. The Chief Joseph Ranch—a functioning cattle ranch in Darby, Montana - is the official location for the Dutton family home and guests can actually rent out cabins when the series isn’t filming. The cabins have even been named the “Lee Dutton” and the “Rip Wheeler”, after the Yellowstone characters.
