There are few things we love more at Good Housekeeping than a really brilliant spy thriller, which is why this week’s social activities mostly revolve around the return of The Night Agent on Thursday. The first series was one of the best dramas of 2023 (if you loved Slow Horses, it's well worth a watch) and if the trailer is anything to go by, we may need to cancel our weekend plans to binge all 10 episodes.
You may remember that the first series followed Gabriel Basso as low-level FBI agent Peter Sutherland, who discovered conspirators inside the US government while working in The White House one night. He also then had the small task of saving the President on his hands. Now, Peter is back and a fully-fledged member of the secretive organisation Night Action where danger is quite literally everywhere.
Here’s everything else you need to know about the new series…
What happened in The Night Agent series one?
Peter Sutherland began the show as a low-level FBI employee with a chequered past who worked in the basement of the White House. He was soon pulled into a mission well beyond his pay grade however after answering taking a call on the Night Action phone line from Rose.
Roped into a major conspiracy, his task was to uncover a mole within the White House who posed a major threat to national security, all the while protecting Rose (Luciane Buchanan). And let’s just say he proved himself more than capable of the challenge.
By the end of the first season, Peter saved the president from an attempted bombing at Camp David and in the final moments, he opened a tablet that read: “Night Action: Mission Brief”, meaning he officially became a Night Agent. He certainly deserved it.
What will happen in The Night Agent series two?
For starters, we know that Peter’s skills are going to be put to work as a proper agent of Night Action, US intelligence's elite fixing force. "It takes a certain kind of person to succeed as a Night Agent," newcomer Catherine (Amanda Warren) says in the teaser.
From what we can tell from the trailer, there are plenty of dangers ahead, including everything from a possible mole in Night Action to experimental weapons in the wrong hands. While Peter can’t trust anyone in these dire new circumstances, we do know that he’ll reunite with Rose and she could well be key to his survival.
