It’s the age-old question many diehard Sex And The City fans can’t help but wonder: forget Mr Big, is Aidan actually the one that got away? Well, the new trailer for And Just Like That... is here and there are some very significant details about what the plot of series 3 will hold for Carrie and Aidan, as Carrie's voiceover promises "something new and unexpected".
When we left Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker) and her rekindled flame Aidan Shaw (John Corbett) in series two, Aidan told Carrie that, despite their romantic reunion, he needed to take some time to focus on his children. From the latest trailer, however, it looks like Aidan is back and will have a big role to play in this seres, although he may have some competition.
It seems romantic sparks will also fly for other characters, including Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte's (Kristin Davis) daughter Lily (Cathy Ang). Ahead of the show's return, we've unpicked the details we spotted in the new trailer and what they mean for the new series...
What can we expect from series 3 for Carrie and Aidan?
The last series left us at Carrie’s farewell dinner party before her big move to Gramercy Park – except Aidan asked for a five-year break to spend with his children. In series 3, it looks like he's back in the picture, with plenty of juicy moments between him and Carrie revealed in the trailer.
One of the earliest shots shows Carrie smiling as she pulls Aidan towards her, before we see her telling Charlotte and Miranda about a postcard he sent. There are also more romantic gestures, with Aidan throwing a stone at her window (and breaking it!) before surprising Carrie at home (causing them both to scream, before laughing) and even the pair of them embracing and disappearing in Carrie's bedroom - kicking the cat out on the way. So far, so good right? Perhaps not.
Of course, nothing is ever straight forward when it comes to Carrie's love life. While there are plenty of hopeful moments in the trailer, there's also a fair sprinkling of uncertainty. In one scene, shot from a distance, Carrie and Aidan stand apart, looking sadly (it seems) at one another. In another, Carrie's dashing neighbour says to her, "You are vibrant," with Miranda picking up on a romantic spark. “You and your neighbour, I kinda caught a little vibe there,” she says to Carrie. But what could that mean for Aidan? It looks like even Carrie isn't entirely sure where they stand. “It’s complicated with Aidan, but I’m trying to figure it out," she says.
Showrunner Michael Patrick King also confirmed in an interview with Entertainment Weekly that Aidan’s ex-wife, Kathy (Rosemarie DeWitt), is set to return for the new season. What else could this throw up for the couple? “It’s an interesting thing when you have Carrie Bradshaw in love figuring out how to make this work when, at a certain age, everyone has a past. There are a couple of booby traps in the Carrie-Aidan history that we’re very aware of, as well,” said Michael continued.
Outside of her will-they-won't-they romancing, Carrie also has a new work project underway, as she decides to write a new book, and this time it's fiction. We see her dealing with a more mundane issue around some of New York City's most fearsome residents - rats! - too.
What else will happen in series 3?
There are plenty of sparks flying around potential romantic interests for other characters in the trailer, including Miranda. "I really like her, but it's a work contact," she says, following a clip of her smiling across at a woman at work. It looks like she isn't the only person with a potential romantic entanglement through her job. Lisa says to Charlotte, "It's okay to have a work crush, right?" before, in another clip, she hastily tries to defend selfies with a handsome colleague on her phone to her family.
Meanwhile, Charlotte seems to still be happily married and now it's her daughter Lily's turn to find her own feet in the dating world. In the trailer, we see Charlotte accidentally interrupt Lily kissing a ballet dancer. While Lily seems to have things all worked out, Seema appears to be having a tricky time in the dating scene, with a montage of her dismissing various dates in a bar. But could Seema's luck be about to change?
One thing that's certain from the new trailer, is there will be plenty of fabulous fashion moments this series, from Carrie's sheer gown filled with roses to a sparkling bodycon dress in midnight blue.
