Both characters have a quite complicated love life, with Helen seeking revenge for the death of her lover Jason (Andrew Koji). Meanwhile, Sam's ex Michael (Omari Douglas) returns, leading to complications due to his unique line of work.

One scene between Sam and Michael didn't quite sit right with Whishaw and Douglas though, who suggested a change and ultimately had it re-shot.

"We had a discussion as the scene didn't feel quite right to them," Barton told Metro.

"It was a scene where they were deciding whether or not they wanted to get back together, and it was about why you would do that and how you'd feel about your ex boyfriend being a hitman, and all that kind of stuff. We changed it and then we filmed it again."

Cast for the six-episode show is rounded out by Andrew Buchan (Broadchurch), Adeel Akhtar (Fool Me Once) and Sarah Lancashire (Happy Valley).

Speaking about her role in the series, Lancashire shared her enthusiasm for a different character compared to her previous work.

"Well, the joy is that I haven't played anybody like her before," she explained. "She's a very self-contained character, but it's all going on inside. I think because she's given the best years of her life to an organisation which has probably robbed her of a partner, children, family, friends, it's grim."

All episodes of Black Doves are available to stream on Netflix.
