Call the Midwife has shared a big update from set, confirming the show is in the final week of filming for 2024.

The hit BBC drama is currently working on season 14 ahead of its debut in 2025 – and it looks like the last days of production have been a soggy affair.

Taking to Instagram, the show posted a picture of star Jenny Agutter (Sister Julienne) being doused in water as they teased "the perils of a wet simple".

"Hello all! It's been a VERY busy week's filming so far, with all of our cast members heavily involved in... certain activities…," they wrote. "There['s] a real end-of-school feel to things here, and the cast are really enjoying each other's company.

"Mind you, the weather has been COLD! And there has been an added dampener to their mood this week.... having to film scenes in HEAVY RAIN!"

The show went on to explain how rain scenes require a "special rain machine" rather than waiting for wet weather, with the use of the showerhead-like device meaning "our team have been liberally soaked in water for every take".

"And in the scenes to follow, once our characters are inside? Well, that's when our costume team takes over - making sure our leading ladies look suitably soggy for the rest of the day by keeping them wet!" they continued.

"In this picture, our trusty costume assistant Georgia soaks Jenny Agutter (Sr Julienne) with water spray before filming a key post-rain scene. You can see from their respectful laughter that they're not enjoying the experience AT ALL.

"Our nuns have faced many tribulations in Call the Midwife over the years, but there are few things worse than ministering to Poplar with a wet simple!"

They went on to tease: "But what is it that's bringing our cast out in such foul weather? You'll have to wait and see..... Call the Midwife returns with a brand new Christmas Special, and Series 14 in early 2025 xx."

The series will air a Christmas special before the next season begins in the New Year, which will move Nonnatus House into the 1970s.

Ahead of filming coming to an end, Call the Midwife teased an "important" moment to come for Zephryn Taitte's character Cyril Robinson.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One and streams on BBC iPlayer.
