Just like our wardrobes shift each season, so do the colours on our nails and it's finally time to put away the darks and neutrals and bring out the lively, brighter nail polish shades as we are finally entering the warmer summer months!
I was a full-time nail technician in a former life, and I still very much keep on top of the newest colours to wear from my favourite brands and find inspiration from nail artists online. One shade I've been seeing all over social media and on the runaways is primrose - but a touch paler. Think of it as butter-core. Like Lurpak, but better.
It's neutral enough to suit most people (just look for the right undertones in the yellow to complement your skin tone) but has enough vibrancy to make a statement. And, it looks seriously chic when accessorised with a straw bag and an all-white outfit.
Still not convinced you'd pull it off? Try it as a feature nail (typically your ring finger and/or thumb are painted with a bolder colour, while the rest of your nails are kept neutral) or incorporate it into a negative space design like a half moon or french tip (or an inverse french tip like shown below).
Personally, I love a negative space design with this trendy colour (negative space is when some of the unpainted nail is showing) as it's a great way to play around with a new colour you might not have immediately thought to try, but it also means the design can be worn for longer as it grows out inconspicuously.
Below I've shared some of my favourite butter inspired nail polishes if you want to give this trend a go. Don't forget to start with a really good base coat, followed by 2-3 coats of the colour, and a quick-drying top coat or drops to seal in the colour.
Looks GH loved this week
• Cate Blanchett is the epitome of effortless cool. Her slouchy, gold sequinned jumper was ‘dressed down mega star’ at Cannes this week. 10/10. No notes.
• Sex and the City spin off And Just Like That is a divisive watch. So too, the wardrobe choices. Carrie Bradshaw’s over-sized hat, snapped while filming S3, has to be seen to be believed. Yay or nay?
• GH fashion director Amanda Marcantonio reckons this celeb was the best-dressed guest at the Chelsea Flower Show. Verdict: 'It ticked all the boxes; romance, charm, beauty, elegance…'
