At this time of year, the shops are awash with bright spring colours and prints, florals being the most dominant of all. It makes sense, of course - spring is when nature comes back to life and suddenly flowers are blooming all around us (not to mention Chelsea Flower Show is in full swing), so no wonder our sartorial tastes are influenced by the beauty of it all.

But for those of us who generally shy away from colour in our wardrobe, spring dressing can prove a bit of a minefield. If this is you, feeling seasonally-appropriate can sometimes come at the cost of your own personal style, but lucky for us, actress Keeley Hawes just gave us a masterclass in nailing spring dressing, with not a floral in sight.

The Scoop actress looked chic as can be in a tailored black double breasted suit. Her structured jacket cinches at the waist to create a flattering fit, which is balanced by the wide-leg cut of her matching black trousers for a modern take on a classic look.

The best dressed guest at Chelsea according to our Fashion Director

Styled with delicate gold jewellery, a white quilted Dior handbag and black heels, Keeley's look is an elegant reminder that spring dressing doesn't always have to rely on pastel colours or a ditsy floral print - sometimes a well-cut suit in a lightweight material is exactly what you need.

While you might associate a plain black suit with going to the office, it's important to remember that it's all in the cut and how you style your suit.

Oversized cuts works perfectly to evoke a more relaxed feel, and wearing it with a T-shirt underneath helps to keep things casual, too.

For evening wear, though, we suggest taking your lead from Keeley and wearing your jacket buttoned up with nothing underneath for a touch of glamour. Simply add a bold lip and heels and you're ready to go.
