With a major Turner show at Tate Britain (until 25 January) and Mike Leigh’s biopic creating a stir, it’s time to explore the town where the artist painted more canvases than anywhere else. The Turner Contemporary gallery, built where his lover Mrs Booth’s lodging house once stood, now presides over seascapes immortalised by the artist.

Stay at the Sands Hotel, which opened in July 2013, and enjoy sundowners on its rooftop bar staring dreamily out over Turner’s favourite seascape. Doubles from £120 per night with breakfast.
