A new picture has just dropped teasing the 2024 Gavin and Stacey Christmas special. The episode, which will air on Christmas Day is set to be the last-ever instalment of the comedy series.

The image shows the four main characters Smithy (James Corden), Gavin (Matthew Horne), Stacey (Joanna Page) and Nessa (Ruth Jones) recreate the iconic photo from the first series from 2007.

News of a final episode, which comes five years after 2019’s Christmas special, was first announced in May 2024, when James Corden took to Instagram to share a photo of him and Ruth Jones with a script, along with the caption: "Some news… It’s official!!! We have finished writing the last ever episode of Gavin and Stacey. See you on Christmas Day, BBC One. Love Ruth and James."

What will happen in the Gavin & Stacey Christmas special 2024

Plot details for Gavin and Stacey: The Finale are being kept under wraps for now of course, but we can happily speculate on what might happen based on how things were left the last time we saw Smithy, Nessa and the rest of the gang on our screens.

The new and final episode comes five years after the 2019 Christmas special where audiences were left on a major cliffhanger involving Smithy (played by James Corden) and Nessa (played by Ruth Jones).

After Smithy somewhat unsuccessfully introduced the Shipmans, Wests, Nessa and his son Neil to his new girlfriend during the festive episode, viewers were shocked to see Nessa get down on one knee in front of Smithy in the final moments. Will the new special give fans a long overdue answer?

Fans who've spotted the cast filming in Barry have reported seeing the actors dressed up for a wedding, but whose wedding is still unconfirmed. Is it finally time for Smithy and Nessa's big day? Only time will tell...

Filming for the episode has taken place throughout summer and autumn of 2024, but it has now been announced that filming has officially wrapped, via a post on the BBC iPlayer Instagram page.

The cast and crew already said their final farewell to Barry, after filming the last scenes there in September.

“You haven’t seen anything because we’ve been indoors, which shows you are true committed fans of the show and we hope that you won’t be disappointed on Christmas Day, when all will be revealed," said Ruth to the fans who had gathered around the set.

She continued: “This is our farewell now to Barry and to Trinity Street, so you won’t be seeing us here anymore but we’ve had a wonderful 17 years. It’s been fantastic.”

To whet our appetite further, James has been sharing some behind-the-scenes snaps to his Instagram, one of Smithy's van and one of actresses Ruth and Joanna.

In November last year, Joanna Page, who plays Stacey in the hit series, shared her ideas of what the upcoming episode could feature.

"Gavin and Stacey's kids would be teenagers now, so that would be quite funny to see," she told the Daily Mail, adding that audiences will obviously also want to know the outcome of Nessa's proposal.
