Lindsay Lohan and Tina Fey have reunited on the Mean Girls premiere red carpet in New York City.
Two decades since their cult teen comedy first came out, the duo were there for the premiere of its musical interpretation on the big screen, which sees Tina Fey writing the script and reprising her role from the original film as maths teacher Ms Norbury.
In the original Mean Girls movie, Lindsay played main character Cady Heron, who must navigate the ruthless hierarchy of American high school after years of homeschooling in Africa.
Speaking to Entertainment Weekly about bringing the stage musical to cinemas, producer Lorne Michaels explained why the new project exists on its own terms.
"It was about: How do we do the best of the musical, plus the best of the original?" he said.
"It isn't a remake, it's a new interpretation. It feels like a familiar enough story, but it's for today."
ReneƩ Rapp, who plays Regina George in the new Mean Girls movie, went on to comment: "There's no version of my existence where Mean Girls wasn't a reference or a cultural moment. I was watching it when I was 4.
"It's been around for 20 years and it's just as popping as it always was. You can't avoid it because it's such a pop-culture phenomenon."
Mean Girls has a January 12 release date in the US and will open on January 17 in the UK.
