Emma Stone has offered a promising update on a sequel to her Disney prequel Cruella.

The Easy A and The Amazing Spider-Man actress played Cruella de Vil in the film, which saw her become a trail-blazing fashion icon who overthrew Emma Thompson's Baroness to take her place as the dog-obsessed villain of 101 Dalmatians.

Speaking to Variety at a red carpet event, Stone was asked when the greenlit sequel would start shooting, and she said: "You tell me. Hopefully sooner rather than later. There's a work in progress kind of thing going on. We'll see."

While things might be a bit up in the air at the moment, the actress said she is looking forward to reprising the role as Cruella is a "blast" to play.

Stone's current movie is quite the 180 from a family-friendly Disney endeavour. Directed by The Favourite's Yorgos Lanthimos, the critically-acclaimed Poor Things is about Stone's character Bella Baxter going through a sexual and political awakening, and there's plenty of raunchy scenes in there, so much so that it had to be cut down for an 18 certificate in the UK.

Speaking about the film's approach to its adult scenes, Lanthimos said: "We had to be confident Emma had to have no shame about her body, nudity [and] engaging in those scenes and she understood that right away.

"The great thing about me and Emma is that we have made four films together; there is a shorthand and we can communicate without having to explain or talk too much about things. As soon as I started saying something about sex, she would say: 'yes', of course, it's Bella. We will do what we need to do."

Poor Things will premiere 12 January in UK cinemas.
