Doctor Who star Ncuti Gatwa received a congratulatory phone call from previous Time Lords David Tennant and Jodie Whittaker after he was announced as the new Doctor.

The actor, who recently made his debut as the Fifteenth Doctor in a bi-regeneration twist, opened up about the call in a new interview with Empire and revealed that Whittaker told him to "embrace the madness".

"Thank God for that call on that day," he continued. "Because it was such a huge day for me, and they just wrapped me up in warmth like a welcome blanket."

The Sex Education actor went on to reveal how he was "wracked with nerves and anxiety" while filming his first season, adding: "I was very, very nervous and questioned everything I did. I’d always want another take."

However, he eventually built up the "stamina" and is currently having a "very fun" time filming his second batch of episodes.

"Season two feels very fun, very enjoyable, very like it’s in my body," he said. "I’m far less stressed. I’m enjoying it now. Oh my God. This is actually the most fun role in the world!"

Doctor Who continues with 'The Church on Ruby Road', airing on Christmas Day (December 25). The show airs on BBC One in the UK and Disney+ elsewhere.

Classic episodes of Doctor Who are now available via BBC iPlayer in the UK.
