Former Strictly Come Dancing: It Takes Two host Zoe Ball has shared her thanks to firefighters after a candle nearly burnt her house down.

The star opened up about the ordeal on her Radio 2 Breakfast Show, after revealing on Monday (October 2) that she had tried baking a cake for the first time.

In her follow-up show today (October 3), Zoe explained that she accidentally left a candle burning in her lounge after getting distracted by her achievement, as well as watching movie The Matrix.

"I haven't told you about what happened to me at the end of the show yesterday," the presenter began. "Do you remember on the show yesterday I was talking about things that have happened to you for the first time?

"Well yesterday, something happened to me for the first time, the fire brigade went to my house. I had left a candle burning in the lounge.

"I was so obsessed with The Matrix when I watched it on Sunday night and the fact that I had made a cake, I had gone to bed and hadn't blown out one of the candles," Zoe continued, explaining she had left it burning when she left for work the next day.

"It was left smouldering in the lounge and at 25 minutes past nine yesterday, my smoke alarms went off and thank goodness! Otherwise, I might have gone home to no home!”

The DJ then revealed that her neighbours noticed what was happening and thankfully "called the fire brigade", before emergency services "went round and put out the candle and stopped my house from burning down".

Calling the firefighters "absolute legends", Zoe said that she "popped in to take them some cake yesterday to say thank you very much", before sharing a warning from the chief firefighter on the team.

"[He] said: 'Please tell your listeners, because it's important, that your local fire and rescue service can provide you with free smoke alarms,'" she recounted, before warning listeners to check their smoke alarm batteries.
