Michelle Obama opened up about an unexpected afternoon she and her family spent at Buckingham Palace with the late Queen Elizabeth II.
The former US First Lady discussed the trip during a live show, broadcast in the Michelle Obama: The Light Podcast, which Good Housekeeping was able to listen to exclusively ahead of its release (Tuesday 21 March).
During the podcast, Michelle describes a trip to London she took with her mum, her two daughters and their godmother. She explains that it wasn’t an official visit, the group were just in London for a family holiday when they received an unexpected call.
“The Queen, Her Majesty, heard we were there and invited us over,” Michelle says. “This is how kind she was to our family.”
Michelle says the five of them spent a whole afternoon at Buckingham Palace, touring the grand rooms and grounds of the building, as well as having tea there.
“They set up tea for us and here we are sitting just in some room in the palace and who comes down to greet us? But Her Majesty,” says Michelle, noting that, even while walking around her own home, The Queen still had her handbag with her.
“The Queen showed us the gold room. There is a gold room, a room full of gold, y’all. Everything in the palace was like, this is what we were trying to do in the White House,” Michelle shared, adding that Her Majesty also let the children sit in her car.
Michelle additionally revealed that the family were taken on a tour of the palace rose gardens, and joked about their scale in comparison to the rose gardens at the White House.
“We were in a buggy riding through the roses forever. I was like, now this is a rose garden!” she says, laughing.
