Sanditon's upcoming third season will be its last, it has been confirmed.
PBS offshoot Masterpiece made the announcement, with a statement from executive producer Susanne Simpson reading (via Deadline): "Sanditon has been an incredibly special series for Masterpiece, and we know it has found its way into the hearts of countless fans.
"While we are sad to say goodbye to the series, we know our audience has a lot to look forward to in this new season."
The period drama is an adaptation of one of Jane Austen's unfinished works, and has been charting its own course since the start of season 2.
The upcoming season will feature new characters joining the show — and not all of them have noble intentions.
Grandpa in My Pocket's James Bolam will be playing an investor called Rowleigh Price, who teams up with Kris Marshall's Tom Parker to try and expand the seaside resort, but Anne Reid's Lady Denham might have something to say about that.
Years and Years' Emma Fielding is also joining, playing a typical Austen mother called Lady Montrose. She turns up with her two children, Lydia and Henry, and intends to see them matched up, which is standard period drama behaviour.
Red Planet Pictures executive producer Belinda Campbell added in another statement: "It’s a thrill to be bringing Sanditon back to audiences for one more trip to the seaside.
"This third and final season is full of the heart and joyful spirit that viewers will connect with. Our dedicated fans have been absolutely amazing in their support of the show, and we hope they’ll enjoy the conclusion of Charlotte and Georgiana’s stories."
Sanditon season 3 will premiere on PBS on March 19, 2023, with the entire season available to stream on that day. ITV airs the show in the UK.
