Call the Midwife star Jessica Raine has revealed what would convince her to return to the show, having left back in 2014.

In an interview with Digital Spy, the actor talked about whether she would come back to the BBC period drama as Jenny Lee: "I feel like… Oh, God… [laughs] What would Jenny Lee be doing now?"

"Yeah. I mean, never say never. It would have to be pretty cool. She'd have to be doing something pretty amazing. Maybe Jenny's in the '60s, having a great time," she said.

"With that, you're very limited with Jenny Lee, because it's Jennifer Worth's story. So you kind of have to be very respectful of that. I don't see it happening – but you never know."

The actor also opened up about her new show The Devil's Hour, in which she plays single mother Lucy Chambers which is plagued by terrifying visions, and what she hopes fans take away from it.

"Well, I watched it recently for the first time as well, and it was so long ago that I filmed it that I was genuinely surprised at how much it drew me in. And I'm watching myself here [laughs]. But all the different aspects of it – I was really drawn in. I was genuinely freaked out," she said.

"I was very much concentrating on the Lucy Chambers aspects of things. It's quite scary, and it goes to quite dark places deliberately. But like I say, it's peppered with humanity and warmth and humour.

"Tom [Moran, writer] started out as a stand-up comic. He can't resist having some fun in there as well. I just love the world that you're thrown into. I think it's kind of edge-of-your-seat. It will really take you out of your life, you know? It will really hopefully absorb you. And I always just love being taken away into another world when I watch something. So it will definitely do that."

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One. The Devil's Hour is set to premiere on October 28 on Amazon Prime Video.
