EastEnders spoilers - Mitchell flashback gets premiere date

EastEnders has unveiled the release date for a flashback episode for the Mitchell family.

This single-strand episode, airing September 5, will feature Jaime Winstone as a young Peggy Mitchell, after previously playing Dame Barbara Windsor in the TV biopic Babs.

Scenes taking place in 1979 will have the Mitchells on the verge of collapse, as Peggy tries to save her marriage to volatile husband Eric Mitchell (Villain's George Russo).

Eric is battling with son Phil (We Are Lady Parts' Daniel Delaney) over who's the man of the family, while Glenda (Poldark's Rose Reynolds) tries to keep young Ronnie and Roxy out of the fray.

On top of it all, the girls' evil father Archie Mitchell (Poldark's Henry Garrett) has one of his infamous schemes in the works and young Grant (Teddy Jay) finds himself in the middle of it all.

This episode will air on BBC One and on BBC iPlayer at 7.30pm on Monday, September 5.

Winstone previously said it has been "such an honour" to play Peggy Mitchell, given her previous experience with Babs.

"There’s certainly a healthy amount of pressure when you’re taking on such an iconic role – I thoroughly enjoyed it," she said.

"Playing this role has really cemented my love and admiration for Barbara as I got to bookend my journey by playing Peggy Mitchell – I hope I’ve done her justice. I’ve loved every minute of it and I can’t wait for everyone to see the episode."

EastEnders airs on Mondays, Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Thursdays at 7.30pm on BBC One, with some episodes airing on BBC Two during summer sporting events. The show also streams on BBC iPlayer.
