Call the Midwife spoilers follow.

The upcoming Christmas special of Call the Midwife is set to see the return of fan-favourite character Rhoda Mullucks (Liz White).

In a recent interview with RadioTimes, show creator Heidi Thomas revealed the news as well as sharing that Rhoda's upcoming storyline will focus around her second pregnancy.

What to read next

"The new pregnancy puts them under a certain amount of pressure and gives them a lot to worry about," Thomas said. "We haven't actually been with that family for five years, so we're picking up the pieces for them and it makes for a very special Christmas special."

As fans of the show will know, Rhoda's last storyline focused around the Thalidomide scandal, with her baby daughter Susan being born with defects after Rhoda was prescribed the medicine while pregnant.

Her story was later revisited in season 6 where Dr Turner helped to fit the child with prosthetic limbs before she began attending nursery.

The writer also teased other upcoming storylines for the episode, revealing: "We also have a story featuring a young woman who's recently been discharged from prison as a single mother and how she finds a community at Christmas when she's completely alone in the world.

"And we also have a talent show, which has been enormous fun, honestly, both to write, rehearse and film. So there's a lot of joy in there at Christmas as well," she added.

Thomas has also shared details about the upcoming season of the show.

She confirmed that season 12 will take place in 1968, a year after abortion was decriminalised under the Abortion Act.

"Women's lives were incredibly different. Abortion had been legalised. Domestic violence was something that was being talked about more openly. The pill had come onto the scene," she said.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
