The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge honoured the Windrush generation yesterday (22 June) during a visit to the new National Windrush Monument which has been unveiled in London’s Waterloo Station.
After the Second World War, the British government asked citizens from the Caribbean to come to the UK to help fill labour shortages and re-build the nation. Those who came between the years of 1948 and 1971 are known as the Windrush generation, named after one of the first ships people began arriving on.
Prince William and Kate attended an event at Waterloo Station and, in a post, said it was a day to, “celebrate and honour the Windrush Generation and the enormous contribution each and every one of them has made, and continue to make, to our society.”
Photographs of the pair shared during their visit show the Duke delivering a speech and the Duchess chatting with young children, as well as revealing a statue of three figures: a man, woman and child.
The caption went onto say that “without question,” the Windrush generation have “made our culture richer, our services stronger, and our fellow countrymen safer” and that, “Without you all, Britain would simply not be what it is today.”
Prince William also offered his, “profound thank you to every member of that generation, and the generations that have followed. And I want you to know that you can count on mine and Catherine’s continued support in helping us achieve a future they would be proud of.”
As well as attending the important event at Waterloo Station, the Duke and Duchess of Catherine visited a youth program in South London which offers facilities for young people to improve skills such as photography and film.
The Duchess even had a go at doing some filming herself, and is pictured trying out some of the high-tech camera equipment.
For the busy day of visits, Kate opted for a monochrome look, wearing an all white trouser suit by Alexander McQueen.
We’ve rounded up some of our favourite white blazers from across the high street which channel her chic look:
The ideal way to dress up any outfit this summer.
