It's been a week of exciting news for fans of Doctor Who. Following the announcement that Sex Education's Ncuti Gatwa has been cast as the next Doctor, it's now been revealed that Who favourites David Tennant and Catherine Tate will be returning to the show!
After some cryptic emojis posted on the Doctor Who Instagram page on May 15, showrunner Russell T Davies and the official page both revealed the news.
"THEY’RE BACK! The Doctor and Donna! But… how?! He wiped her memory! If she remembers, she'll die! But, but… is it a flashback? A dream sequence? A lie? A fantasy? A parallel universe?! Alt Doctor? The Land of Fiction?! You'll find out in 2023 as Doctor Who hits its 60th – diamond! – anniversary!" he captioned the upload.
He followed up with an official statement, saying: "They're back! And it looks impossible – first, we announce a new Doctor, and then an old Doctor, along with the wonderful Donna, what on earth is happening?
"Maybe this is a missing story. Or a parallel world. Or a dream, or a trick, or a flashback. The only thing I can confirm is that it’s going to be spectacular, as two of our greatest stars reunite for the battle of a lifetime."
Davies tagged the post's location as "Time & Space".
Fans will remember the emotional last episode Tennant's Tenth Doctor shared with Tate's Donna in 2010's 'The End of Time', when The Doctor had to wipe Donna's memory of all their adventures when she gains all of his knowledge, as her brain can't handle it.
We'll eagerly await details of how the pair will return in next year's 60th anniversary episode – for the 50th anniversary's 'Day of the Doctor' in 2013, the Tenth Doctor joined Matt Smith's Eleventh Doctor and John Hurt's War Doctor as several incarnations of The Doctor teamed up to end the Time War, so a possible adventure with Ncuti Gatwa's new Time Lord is an exciting prospect indeed!
Doctor Who's next special premieres in Autumn 2022 on BBC One in the UK. In the US, the show airs on BBC America, with series 1-12 available on HBO Max.
