The Split's finale gets emotional reaction from fans

The Split spoilers follow.

The Split's final episode (May 9) did not leave everything resolved and tied in a neat bow – because that's not how life works.

Despite its usual dramatic antics, the show stayed true to its roots in the end and kept its last moments realistic, focusing instead on the importance of moving on, letting go, and staying close to family.

Unfortunately for Nathan and Hannah fans out there, it was not meant to be for the couple in the end.

While Nathan had one last meltdown, confiding in Hannah that he still loved her and he did not want a divorce, for once, Hannah held her ground.

"We can't fix this, Nathan," said Hannah, reassuring him that he was only confused and overwhelmed over his fast developing relationship with Kate.

Not only that, Hannah paid a visit to Kate, convincing her to take Nathan back as the two women finally found common ground – their growing family's well-being.

Some time later, Nathan was seen at Hannah's house as the pair tearfully finalised their divorce. But the bittersweet moment ended on a happy note as Kate stopped by and the family appeared all together with the children, finally getting on.

And if any fans were hoping for a Hannah and Christie ending instead – unfortunately, that was also a no-go from The Split writers.

In a mature gesture, Hannah told Christie that while she loved him, she did not want "a fantasy". Her family was in London, where she would remain instead of flying away into the sunset (with New York as the destination) with him.

Nina began putting her life back together – with Zander's confirmation that her career at the firm would not be over any time soon – as she went to an Alcoholics Anonymous meeting and bumped into Melanie on her way out.

Nathan's lawyer, who minutes before had been accused of being a terrible person before being fired by Nathan, advised Nina that she would need to work hard to make amends.

In an emotional scene, Lenny also got her happy ending as Felix "rejected" her attempts to end their marriage because of her illness, promising that he would care for her until the end.

Rose's ending was more of an open-ended one – as it often happens when it comes to matters of grief.

While the Defoe sister was seen still very much grieving over James' death, she looked more at peace than in previous episodes, with the series hinting at a potential future romance between her and the vicar.

However, if anyone was left especially emotional by The Split's ending, it was its loyal viewers, who took to Twitter to express their tearful goodbyes to the drama.

"I have just wept through The Split," wrote one. "Just too good."
