Derry Girls star says season 3 has a "perfect ending"

Derry Girls recently returned for its third series, and with two episodes down, it looks like there's only four episodes left of the beloved comedy.

While it's going to be sad to say goodbye to the characters we've been laughing along with (or at), star Dylan Llewellyn has teased that it's going to be a good send-off.

Speaking about the show ending to The Guardian, Llewellyn, who plays James on the Channel 4 comedy, has said those final scenes will be "bittersweet".

"Very mixed emotions," he said. "The show has been such a huge part of my life and has helped me loads personally.

"So I'm sad it's the end of an era, but happy because [creator] Lisa McGee has written such a perfect ending. It feels like the right time to stop. Quality, not quantity."

Reminiscing about the final day of filming, Llewellyn explained that: "Everyone was in shock: 'What the hell? This is our last day.'

"There were lots of hugs, some tears, several parties. It was very special. The girls have become like my sisters over the past four years."

Channel 4

While he agrees that this is the right time to end the main show, he thinks that there's definitely room to launch a spin-off series or two.

"I’d love to watch a spin-off about Erin's family," he said. "Or a show about Sister Michael called Derry Nuns."

Elsewhere in the interview, the actor talked about his role in the upcoming Sex Pistols biopic that Danny Boyle has directed, and LGBTQ+ Channel 4 comedy Big Boys, which he called "a funny, beautiful, coming-of-age story that tackles tough subjects such as depression and male mental health".

Derry Girls airs on Tuesday nights at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
