Derry Girls season 3 promises romance for Nicola Coughlan's Clare Devlin.

The Channel 4 sitcom's writer Lisa McGee revealed the storyline ahead of the third and final series' premiere in just a couple of days' time.

"Episode six is Halloween," McGee said. "Halloween in Derry is massive anyway, but the girls are off to see Fatboy Slim, they don't get tickets, so Michelle [Mallon, played by Jamie-Lee O'Donnell] tells this elaborate lie on national TV in order to bag some VIP passes.

"Obviously they get caught, and that has lots of consequences," she said.

"It's a really joyful, lovely episode. Clare meets a girl..."

You could easily argue it's been a long time coming for Clare, to receive a proper love interest after coming out as lesbian at the end of the first series.

However, one unfortunate thing we know ahead of the show's return is that Clare won't feature as much as we'd like in the final series.

"Last year was really difficult," Coughlan told Digital Spy and other media. "I won't lie because, you know, at the best of times trying to manage different projects, it's such a push and pull.

"We were meant to film Derry Girls in January 2021. And I was totally free and they decided to push it again. And that caused me insane stress because I was on [what] in the industry is called first call. So it means you have to go and do the show that you're on first call to, which was Bridgerton.

"And I was like 'Guys, can we just film it?' And they were like, 'No, we're gonna wait.' And I was like, 'Oh', so [we had to make] compromises happen in the script of Derry Girls.

"It was devastating to me because I wanted to be in all of this. But compromises had to be made," she further explained.

"And you know, they had to cut down my role somewhat, which was hard. Really, really hard."

Derry Girls returns next Tuesday (April 12) at 9.15pm on Channel 4.
