Call the Midwife's latest season was an emotional affair, to say the least, and the series has now acknowledged as such in a brand new post.

The show wrapped up its 11th season last month, the finale coming in the wake of a huge cliffhanger that saw a number of lives hang in the balance following a big train crash.

The BBC show has now shared a series of behind-the-scenes photographs from filming on Instagram, explaining how they show a lighter side amid the heavier events of the season.

"As we wind down on Series 11, we've been looking back over our behind-the-scenes photo collection – and noticing just how much fun our cast have when not actually filming!" the show's official account wrote in the caption.

"Call the Midwife feels like one big family while filming – but over the course of the filming year, that family has a lot of very emotional and difficult scenes to do," they noted. "This, we think, brings us that bit closer together – but it also adds to the giggling!"

The caption continued: "There's is a lot that's dark and moving about the work we do – so the secret is to find the light when we can x."

The show went on to reveal that preparations are underway to film the upcoming Christmas special and season 12, due later this year and in 2023, respectively.

Following the recent finale, fans expressed their relief that no major tragedy occurred, especially after creator Heidi Thomas previously suggested that one could be on the way.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
