Call the Midwife spoilers follow.
Call the Midwife creator Heidi Thomas has suggested a devastating death could be coming in this weekend's season finale.
Viewers of the BBC One series were left pretty shocked after last weekend's episode, which saw Sister Julienne (Jenny Agutter) and Doctor Patrick Turner (Stephen McGann) caught in a train crash and unconscious, their fates left up in the air.
"The thing is, if there was a train crash near where you live, in the world of Call the Midwife, the two people you could rely on to come and sort everything out are Dr Turner and Sister Julienne," the writer noted to RadioTimes.com.
"But if they are in the eye of the storm, who will save them?"
So could they really do the unthinkable and kill off the two characters? Well, Thomas admitted she is "a very daring woman", suggesting it could happen.
Speaking further on the dramatic storyline, the creator admitted it came in part from wanting to be a bit more "challenging" after COVID-19 restrictions.
"What appeals to me as a dramatist isn't the spectacular nature of anything, but I know my Call the Midwife characters so well, as do the audience, so the idea of taking people with whom you're very familiar, and putting them in an unfamiliar situation, immediately creates all sorts of scenarios we don't normally get to see," she explained.
Fans expressed their sadness at the last weekend's train crash twist on social media, while Timothy Turner actor Mac Macmillan recently teased drama to come.
"In all 10 years of doing this show this series was by far the most physically and mentally exhausting and challenging it's ever been, in such a rewarding way," he tweeted. "Equally excited and terrified for people to see it."
Call the Midwife airs on Sundays at 8pm on BBC One.
