And Just Like That's season one finale is set to air this week, but the Sex and the City sequel series – which, it's safe to say, has prompted a mixed reaction from viewers – may not be done just yet.

In a new interview with Variety, writer-director Michael Patrick King expressed interest in continuing the continuation, while Carrie Bradshaw star Sarah Jessica Parker admitted that she would "definitely" be on board if HBO Max were to renew another instalment.

"We did something that was hard to do, which is we took something familiar and did make it new... for better and for worse," King told the publication, when asked whether he thinks the show has the foundations in place to see it carry on and on.

What to read next

"Michael and I spoke two weeks ago, and said: 'OK, when are we going to talk about this?' Because there's a calendar and you don't want to let too much time pass. There feels like there's momentum."

As the finale approaches, it seems like more episodes might be needed to fully explore – or even conclude – certain storylines that have been set up so far, from Charlotte (Kristin Davis) continuing to navigate motherhood and Carrie dabbling in the dating world again following Big's death, to Miranda (Cynthia Nixon) navigating her newfound queerness amidst her divorce from Steve Brady (David Eigenberg).

"Men have a midlife crisis, and it's expected. They leave their wife, they get a car. Miranda had an incredibly interesting break from her social self. She let her red hair go gray," King explained.

"She quit her corporate job, and she threw herself into improving herself. And what came at her was something bigger. A big force! Life came at her, just the way death came at Carrie."

And Just Like That, the sequel to Sex and the City, airs on HBO Max in the US and Sky Atlantic and NOW in the UK.
