The BBC has teased the return of its hit show Gentleman Jack with a series of brand-new first look images of the new season.
Written by Sally Wainright, the period drama follows the life of the LGBTQ+ trailblazer and provocative icon Anne Lister.
In season one, we saw Anne return to Halifax, West Yorkshire in 1832 to restore her ancestral stately home, Shibden Hall. Anne then began a relationship with Ann Walker, which could have serious repercussions.
Season two will continue to follow Anne's life, and will see her married to her love Ann. It's 1833 and as they set up their home life together as wife and wife, their refusal to keep their love and spirit quiet may cause even more problems.
It's based on the real-life diaries of Anne Lister, parts of which were written in code, with the BBC confirming that series two will once again follow the narratives set out in that text as its source material.
Suranne Jones will be returning to the show to play Anne Lister, alongside Sophie Lundle as Lister's wife Ann Walker.
Gemma Jones (Aunt Anne Lister), Timothy West (Jeremy Lister), Jodhi May (Lady Vere Cameron), Katherine Kelly (Elizabeth Sutherland), Derek Riddell (Captain George Sutherland), Stephanie Cole (Aunt Ann Walker), and Peter Davison (William Priestley) are all returning to the cast too.
They will be joined by newcomers Gemma Whelan (Marian Lister) and Lydia Leonard (Mariana Lawton) as well as Joanna Scanlan, who plays Anne Lister's former lover Isabella 'Tib' Norcliffe.
The show will return to BBC One and BBC iPlayer this spring, though no specific release date has been confirmed by the broadcaster at this time.
The show is produced in collaboration with US broadcaster HBO. Series one is available to stream in full on BBC iPlayer now.
Gentleman Jack season 2 will air on BBC One and BBC iPlayer later this year.
