Netflix has unveiled the first teaser for Pinocchio, its new take on the classic story starring the voice talents of Star Wars' Ewan McGregor, Torchwood's Burn Gorman and Stranger Things' Finn Wolfhard.
Helmed by Mark Gustafson and The Shape of Water director Guillermo del Toro, who collaborated on the script with Over the Garden Wall creator Patrick McHale, the stop-motion musical's star-studded cast also consists of John Turturro, Tim Blake Nelson, Ron Perlman, Cate Blanchett, Christoph Waltz and Tilda Swinton.
Harry Potter's David Bradley and Gregory Mann (Victoria) are on board as Gepetto and the titular puppet-turned-real boy, respectively.
The teaser opens on McGregor's moustachioed cricket telling viewers that he wants to tell them a tale.
"It's a story you may think you know, but you don't. Not really," the character chuckled. "You see, I, Sebastian J. Cricket, was there. As a matter of fact, I lived, actually lived, in the heart of the wooden boy."
It then confirmed that the film would land on the streaming platform sometime in December 2022.
Talking to Collider about the project back in December, del Toro revealed that the movie will be set in Mussolini's Italy during the 1930s, and that he was heavily inspired by Mary Shelley's 'Frankenstein' during production.
"Every time I watch the movie I just sob like a baby. It's as personal as it gets, as moving as it gets," the filmmaker, who has already released Nightmare Alley this year, added. "It's unlike any version of the story you've ever seen. It's completely unlike it.
"It subverts the moral underpinnings of the original fable, which is, in order to be a real boy you have to change. You're going to become flesh and blood. This is about becoming a real boy by acting... acting like a real human, period."
