Call the Midwife star Jenny Agutter talks Christmas special

Call the Midwife's Christmas special will see the return of Mother Mildred, played by the mighty Miriam Margolyes.

This update was shared by Jenny Agutter, who recently caught up with Digital Spy and other media ahead of the show's festivities.

In the Christmas Day episode, Mildred will be seen reading Charles Dickens classic A Christmas Carol to the children.

"Oh, she's a joy. She's a laugh. She's lovely," Agutter, who plays Sister Julienne, commented.

As for whether we'll see more of her in season 11, the actress revealed: "She comes in and out. She's certainly... you know, she remains Mother Superior. So she's there.

"Yes, I must say, I did love — it's magical, when she reads that Dickens to the children. I was actually just totally riveted by that. I could have taken that for ages."

Margolyes, who fans will remember as Professor Sprout, teased on the radio last month how the set of Harry Potter featured a swear jar for her potty mouth – was there one on Call the Midwife?

"I think there were several really," Agutter laughed. "We sort of turned a deaf ear to it. Yes. She said to me, 'Did you know I have a bit of a reputation.' I said, 'I had heard.'"

Call the Midwife's Christmas special will air on Saturday, December 25 at 8pm on BBC One. A new series is due to air in 2022.
