Bridgerton spoilers follow.

Bridgerton star Nicola Coughlan has promised that fans can expect some very juicy scenes in the upcoming second season of the period drama, teasing that she has filmed some "big, heavy, dramatic stuff" for its finale.

The Derry Girls actress stars in the Netflix hit as Penelope Featherington, a young debutante who is revealed at the end of the show's first season to also be the anonymous gossip writer Lady Whistledown and who has been busy spreading scandalous news throughout the social season.

"The drama has amped up a lot," she said. "As I say, we're shooting all those big dramatic scenes for the end. It's exhausting but very satisfying."

It remains to be seen whether Penelope's secret identity as Lady Whistledown will be exposed to the other characters during season two, but Coughlan has promised that, either way, viewers at least will get to see more of her character's private life.

"I think it's safe to say that you do. And you know, those final moments of series one was definitely a peek into her life," she said. "I think in series two you kind of see how the sausage gets made and all that's happening.

"I felt very lucky when I got given the script to series two, like when you're an actor in a show already... [and] they've just given [me] so much good stuff."

We're more than ready to see what the residents of the ton have been getting up to since the first season ended with Daphne (Phoebe Dynevor) and Simon Basset (Regé-Jean Page) welcoming a baby son, and Coughlan revealed that we will get to see how two of Penelope's closest relationships have developed.

"Her and Colin Bridgerton (Luke Newton), you get to explore their relationship [in season two], they've become closer in this sort of gap [since] we've last seen them," she said, adding that we will also see Penelope's best friend Eloise Bridgerton (Claudia Jessie) debut into society.

"Claudia Jessie and I get to [go to] the other balls together," she said. "She is just a joy and a delight, I love building scenes with her."

The actress recently shared the news that the big reveal of Lady Whistledown's identity wasn't always going to be made in season one, with the initial plan being to provide a red herring and make Cressida Cowper (Jessica Madsen) appear to be the anonymous gossip.

Bridgerton season 1 is now available to watch on Netflix. Season 2 is in production. Secret Cinema with Fever Present Bridgerton opens in February 2022 in a secret outer London location. To purchase tickets, head here.
