The BBC has addressed fears that Call the Midwife could leave the broadcaster following a lease deal of the show's studio with Netflix.

The hit period drama has been a staple of BBC One since its debut back in 2012, though Netflix's recent signing of a long-term deal at Longcross Studios – where the series is filmed – has raised concern over the show's future.

However, Piers Wenger, the controller of BBC drama commissioning, has assured fans that Call the Midwife will not be going anywhere.

"That show will be made – we're not going to stop making it just because we don't have access to studio space," he told Digital Spy and other press.

However, he did note the challenges of the current TV landscape, continuing: "More generally, of course, it's such a huge problem and lack of availability drives up costs and that is something that we are really feeling the impact of."

This isn't the first time the BBC has responded to speculation of a move, with the corporation denying reports earlier this year that Netflix was looking to 'poach' Call the Midwife.

"This is categorically untrue and Call the Midwife will remain a BBC commissioned series," a spokesperson said in May.

"It enjoys great success on PBS, Netflix and other networks around the world but it continues to be much loved by huge audiences on BBC One and that is where it will stay."

Meanwhile, following the conclusion of the show's most recent series in the spring, the show's cast revealed which props they would like to steal from set.

Call the Midwife airs on BBC One.
