Strictly's Tom Fletcher talks Back to the Future dance backstory

Strictly Come Dancing star Tom Fletcher is coming back to the show for Movie Week, and he's opened up about doing an homage to his favourite film.

In Saturday's episode (October 9) of Strictly, McFly frontman Tom and his professional dance partner Amy Dowden will be dancing to 'Johnny B Goode' from Back to the Future.

In tonight's It Takes Two (October 7), Tom said the sci-fi cult classic holds a special meaning for him.

"This movie changed my life by the way," he explained. "It means so much to me that we're getting to do this on Movie Week.

"My band is named after [Marty] McFly. This movie is the reason I play guitar and I'm in a band, so I'm living the dream on Saturday night."

Teasing their jive, he also revealed the dance will include a prop: "I do have a real guitar – I have Marty's guitar."

This is Tom's first week back on the show since the pair had to isolate for 10 days after receiving a positive COVID-19 diagnosis. They both had to sit out of last Saturday's show (October 2).

Their isolation continued into this week, meaning that they had to conduct much of their training via FaceTime from their separate homes.

"It was really tough. I mean, I tried my best," Tom admitted. "It's really hard doing it on your own, so getting in the room yesterday with each other, it suddenly feels like, 'Oh I understand what that's supposed to look like'."

The pair were finally able to practice together in person on Wednesday (October 6). Tom shared a photo from the studio on Instagram with the caption: "LET'S GO!"

Each of the celebrities this week will choose a movie to pay homage to with their dance. The movie tributes include Pirates of the Caribbean, James Bond, Sleeping Beauty, Shrek and Hairspray.

Strictly Come Dancing 2021 continues this Saturday (October 9) on BBC One.
