The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge have honoured Prince Philip with a memorial post on their official Instagram account, to mark what would have been his 100th birthday today (10 June).
The royal couple shared a photograph of the Queen observing roses at Windsor Castle, after the Royal Horticultural Society presented her with a Duke of Edinburgh Rose, named in his honour.
The rose has been planted in the East Terrace Garden at the castle in memory of Prince Philip and sales of the rose will help support the Duke of Edinburgh Award Scheme, a legacy of which the Duke was said to be particularly proud.
A message alongside the photograph read, “Remembering His Royal Highness The Duke of Edinburgh, on what would have been his 100th birthday,” before going on to explain the special significance of the flower the Queen received.
Members of the public expressed their condolences and commended the sentimental gesture, saying that “Prince Philip is so missed by everyone,” and “it’s such a beautiful rose.”
The official Royal Family account also shared images of Her Majesty accepting the rose from the RHS, whilst Princess Eugenie and Clarence House, the account for Prince Charles and the Duchess of Cornwall, chose their own personal commemorations.
Princess Eugenie said she was, “thinking of Grandpa on what would have been his 100th birthday,” sharing a smiling photograph of her grandparents alongside the message.
Clarence House posted a photograph of Prince Charles in 1952 as a child, holding his father’s hand after the Duke returned from a trip to Malta.
